2005 SV1000 w/20,000 miles on the clock

Its black with D&D cans.... that's 'bout all I know about it.

any idea what I should look for?

I know there are damn near bullet proof just from seeing them tossed at the track, fixed and raced again.

anybody else have some info they would care to pass along?

It just so happens that one of several piles on my office desk had the April 2010 issue of Sport Rider open to the article, "Great Sportbikes of the Past"- the whole thing is about the SV1000, shows several modded bikes, kewl stuff.

Surely there's an owner forum online somewhere...

Good luck! : )

Good riding buddy had one with the Yoshimura pipes and it sounded great. He sold it 3years ago. He kicks himself everytime I bring it up. His favorite bike but he had to replace after 2yrs because that is what he always does. He went to a GSXR1000 and now has a Bandit. He likes the bandit but really still misses the SV.

I was looking at Suzuki's before purchase of XB-R, my first Buell.
I'd decided earlier, TL-R (?), was most desirable model.

I bought the mighty XB and live happily ever after.

My son Mike rides a nice SV1000S with the lowers (see below) when we ride together. Has a set of pipes and some tuning. When I road my M2 with a pipe, K&N and race ECM I would stay with him to about 80 mph and then he would come around me. We were pretty evenly matched in these canyons due to lower speeds and my good handling.

Fast forward to 2008 and I can out ride him anywhere on my tuned 1125R. I was going to buy exactly the same bike when the 1125 came along. His handling is very good and performance is no slouch. If I had a chance to get one I would jump on it. A really great sport bike that can be had relatively cheap. Just not a GSXR 1000. Bob

SV1000 is a great bike. I rode one about 90 miles and got to wind it up a bit. Good torque, smooth power delivery, it was a very fun ride.

Get the Sport Rider article. It has a short list of known issues and their fixes. One of them was an electrical thing that was kinda annoying.

I ride with a guy that has one, just like the picture above.

He loves that thing. I've never ridden it, but he sure seems to have fun on it.

I haven't heard any complaints from him about it either.

do you really care if people take notice of you? Last time i checked riding was about having fun, not some sort of vanity fair

He already has 2 buells, why not mix it up a bit and have some variety.

I know when I bought my Buell, "people noticing" was nowhere on the list of reasons why I wanted one.
In fact, I think I quit worrying about what "people notice" about me when I was about 25 or so.}

Why would you not?

The SV is a great bike. Great track bike.

You can practically build a complete bike from spare parts at any track day.

I thought I wanted an SV1000 till I sat on it and realized the hard seat and sporty riding position was'nt for me so I got a Bandit 1200s instead. It's time to sell the Bandit now that I have a Buell.

a seat and handle bars are an easy and common fix though!

(but i'm glad you went the way you did, for now you've got a buell!)

Wolf, I had an 03 1000s, great motor, so-so suspension. Plan on putting a GXsr front end and shock on it to ride it like I KNOW you will! Mine started to get out of sorts at about 8/10ths. More of a "sporty" bike.

It's time to sell the Bandit now that I have a Buell.
While I love my Buell, and won't be getting rid of it, I do regret selling my Bandit.
The Bandit was a lot more suited for Highway duty, and the dull commute I used to have to do.
33 miles one way, 98% interstate.
The Bandit has it's place, but like you, once I bought the Buell, the Bandit started collecting dust.

Had an '03 SV1000N- I called it my "Sucati". Great bike, excellent motor, and totally reliable. The areas where Suzuki skimped were suspension and brakes. The SV1000 has great potential- the answer lies in a GSX-R front end swap and upgraded rear shock. With these changes an SV really becomes Suzuki's 998 (for a lot less money and maintenance). You will be happy with this bike- go for it.

A buddy had one that he really liked until he tried to cut a deer in half with it.

Neither the SV nor the deer survived the encounter.

I own a SV650. Love the bike. If you want some more information you can check out SVportal.com or Svrider.com. Lots of great things you can do to these bikes. Here is a couple quick shots of mine.

The SV community is huge - 650 and 1000 have many fan boards with tons of good info.

Suspension basically sucks (no surprise). No real adjustments except spring preload on both ends.

Cartridge emulators and re-springing the forks at a MINIMUM - and a GSXR shock will get you closer. AS mentioned above, swapping to GSXR forks/brakes/wheel in front will get you MUCH CLOSER to sportbike handling and control.

Handling-wise the SV1000 is not in the same league as the SV650. It's still a fun bike with a good motor.
