alright guys so our computer crashed a week or so ago and we lost basically everything we had on our computer (which didn't bother me to much, i didn't have anything important on there anyway....loosing my itunes was pretty annoying though) I'm pretty bored right now and wasting time on craigslist looking at computers (laptops) I've wanted one for a while, and probably wont buy one for a while but am just trying to decide on what to get? i don't need to have the latest and best model or anything, I'd more or less just use it for homework, music, and Internet. I'm not against mac or PC. I've had PC my whole life, but have been on macs before. i do like the macs from what I've experienced. but like i said I'm open to opinions. at home I'm still living with dial up Internet, at school we have wifi (along with most other places) just now i found these on craigslist http://peoria.craigslist.org/sys/1666021973.html http://peoria.craigslist.org/sys/1669637061.html http://peoria.craigslist.org/sys/1665755325.html i'm not saying i like any of them particularly, but the prices are what i'm willing to spend once i decide to drop the cash on one. or is buying a used computer just a horrible idea in general? |

Best result: buy from someone you know & thoroughly test drive it; like used car. Used laptop + new hard-drive = reliable value. Toshiba's 'Satellite' laptop models serve me well. Cheap, durable, popular/available components like memory, battery, and hard-drive. |

I've had good luck with my Gateway laptop. If I were to buy a new one, though, it'd be a Mac. I have XP Pro, and it's servicable...but you couldn't PAY me to go to a new version of Windows. I'd rather have a Mac anyway One thing I did to save data on a desktop that died a while ago (I had Chrysler parts lookup on it, and didn't want to lose that) was get a power cord setup off ebay. If you unhook the hard drive and look at the connector type (where it plugs in), you can identify the "type" (SCSI, etc). I found a setup that mirrors the factory connector, has a plug-into-the-wall power supply to turn it on, and goes to a USB cable for data transfer. Since it wasn't my drive that died, but my power supply, I was able to spool up the drive and use it whenever I want. Basically I have an (ugly) 80GB backup drive now And I think the setup was all of $12 or something silly. |

True - do not despair of saving your hard drive data. How did your computer "die?" I mean, it may not really be dead. They are like dogs: sometimes they die, sometimes they just play dead. I've had my computer crash before, blue screen of death, all that stuff. Just sorted it out with a repair/reinstall of XP (but not just any old repair/reinstall - there's a really excellent one that is on the original xp install disc that comes with the pooter. Let me know what the problem is, and maybe there's help. I'm not at all a pooter guru, but I absolutely couldn't let go of some of the data on my drive when it "crashed," so I dug for answers and found some. |

At my last job I had an IMB Lenovo. Super light weight (nice for traveling), compact, and low heat output (doesn't cook your legs if you have it sitting in your lap). If I ever buy a laptop for myself, that's probably what it'll be. |

Lenovo for durability. I have three Lenovo's. I have two T61's (on 14.1" and then an 15.4"), and an X41T (Tablet PC). I have been nothing but impressed by them. I also have an Acer Travelmate 6292 I bought for the smaller size with beefy specs. Works well but the build quality is nothing like Lenovo's. But like Fahren said, laptops mostly like to play dead aren't too hard to fix yourself. |

Lenovo? Buy it if you like supporting the communist chinese government which owns 80% of lenovo. I would suggest a macbook, or an hp dv series machine. |
