as for the picketing I have mixed emotions on this, they are Picketing the funeral of a soldier that put his life on the line to preserve that freedom for them that lets them do it. a law stopping them from picketing would be desecrating the soldiers memory more than the picketing could ever do itself.

a peaceful barrier is a valid solution, they have every constitutional right to be there but no moral right, so people stand in the way and they have every constitutional right to stand in their path without causing harm.

This is truth.

I fully support the Patriot Guard Riders and what they do. I have yet to be able to make it to a ride, but I will some day.

There have been several instances where these Westboro jackasses have been thwarted by a good, peacable assembly of PGR and others.

I also support and defend the rights that we ALL have as Americans, no matter who or what we are. You have to accept the bad with the good when it comes to freedom of speech, because without it, we would be nothing.}

True that...he gave himself for freedom, including the freedom of speech.

Didn't even know this happend in Maryland, wish I could've been there with PGR.

I recall this kind of crap happening to American Vietnam Veterans as they returned home. Whether they had died for their country or not. Protests were everywhere, often with violence.

I know you guys have seen it in movies where they could not even wear their uniforms getting off public transportation. I remember a veteran's funeral where attendies' got egged and yelled at, not too far from my hometown. I guess not everybody can agree on the purpose of war and warriors.

Had it been one of my family members the offenders likely would have been shot(wouldn't necessarily be by me, I would have probably been running home to get a weapon).

I have ridden with some Patriot Guard folks on benefit rides for fallen soldiers, once on a 33F degree day in the rain. More people showed up than was originally planned for, so there was no way they could cancel the ride, Thankfully though, they shortened it from fifty miles to twenty five. I will ride with them again if they call for it.

three words:

Disturbing... The... Peace...

Not to mention that law enforcement officers can detain you for 71 hours and 59 minutes without cause. Plenty of time for a funeral.

ACLU staff attorney Lili Lutgens says the First Amendment protects the right to peaceably assemble EXCEPT near funerals, wakes, memorial services and burials.

Mike, I truely understand what you are saying... but what if another interpretation were put on it by those in power... say:
}<some_crazy_congress_person> says the First Amendment protects the right to peaceably assemble EXCEPT near any government office, political rally, political speech, etc. including any speech against any elected official that could be deemed "hate speech"

Think of the impact of THAT...

The first amendment does exactly what it was meant to do, and is, regardless of emotion surrounding the speech, perfect the way it is written.}

+1 Hughlysses for that link. That's a great way to show just how absurd and disgusting WBC is. "God Hates Ponies"--awesome.

I think Dennis Miller's observation on flag burning applies here, too: "Burning the flag doesn't mean you're un-American, it just means you're a colossal a$$hole." Sure, what WBC does is completely protected by the 1st Amendment, but that doesn't make it a decent or right thing to do. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

Conversely, popping Fred Phelps in the mouth would be legally impermissible, but I bet it would feel pretty "right" to a lot of people, myself included.

It takes one helluva warped mind to tie homosexuality to fallen soldiers as a cause-and-effect. That's some world-class homophobia right there. Most Baptist churches I've been in teach that sin is sin is sin, so to pick a relatively harmless one out of the bunch and go nuts with it seems even stranger. I'd much rather hang with a homosexual than a murderer or a rapist, I can tell ya that.

Did you see in that laughing squid blog the first picture where they're holding a "God hates Jews" sign? Guess they've never heard of God's Chosen People. Probably would need to actually open a Bible for that and not just wave it around. Need a Spidey facepalm right... about... here.

BTW, this has to be the best anti-hate retort ever!

Looks like they're protected with the First Amendment in our country, not so in many others:

Ray,

"<some_crazy_congress_person> says the First Amendment protects the right to peaceably assemble EXCEPT near any government office, political rally, political speech, etc. including any speech against any elected official that could be deemed 'hate speech'"

Try to conduct an organized protest anywhere near the President lately?

You won't be allowed. You'll be sequestered far away from the premises of whatever local event he might be attending. They did this at the political conventions as well.

My first Amendment right to free speech also lets these a$$hats spout garbage. It's the way it is.

I think the PGR guys are awesome, and will check them out.

I love the concept of ridicu-protest as a way to ruin some intense guys day...... and if the signs are funny enough, I'd have to laugh even if they were ruining mine.

If any of you want to make a difference now. Get a hold of your local PGR chapter and go ride with these guys. I can tell you as an active duty Soldier I have been on the side delivering the flag in white gloves and it is a very emotional time for families. One of these days...perhaps several years from now I plan on retiring and even further down the line I would like to be laid to rest with the support and respect that the PGR provides.

When's the next protest at their church?
