I am planning an Iron Butt ride for late April to early May of this year.

Starting point will be Long Beach CA. Destination is Durango, CO.

Tentative schedule is departure April 30, return May 3. The plan is to get the 1500 mile (Bun Burner Gold) run on the way out, and the 1000 mile (Saddle Sore) run on the way back.

Normally you have to complete a Saddle Sore ride before you qualify to run the Bun Burner, but I've applied for special permission to do the rides in reverse order. I expect that request will be granted.

Anyone else interested in growing callouses on their ass with me?

You better grow the calluses before the SS1k or the BB, or you'll have blisters when you get home!

Good luck- post a ride report.

No, not on a Buell... on my Kawasaki Z1000. I did a couple similar rides on the XB12R but this will be my first documented ride for posterity's sake.

Just got word back from IBA, I can run the Bun Burner and Saddle Sore in any order I choose. They're also going to let me carry an extra fuel tank as long as I carefully document the amount of fuel I buy at each stop and where I pull over to refill from the can.

Things are shaping up nicely.

Stay tuned.

Why not on a Buell?
I've done several 700+ mile days on my Uly, and my wife has done several on her Ss. A Saddle Sore 1000 is easily within reach. I'm not sure if I want to do a Bun Burner Gold on any bike any more. I've done several 1200 mile stints over the years, but I don't enjoy pushing quite that hard any more.

Just for amusement. The bun burner is 1500 miles in 24 hours? That is over 60 mph for 24 hours straight?!? Ok, you need probably 4 gas stops. Lets give another hour to eat. 70 mph for 22 hours.

You guys are nuts. (in a good way)

The Bun Burner is 1500 miles in 36 hours. The Bun Burner Gold (which is what the OP is planning to do) is 1500 miles in 24 hours.

Why not on a Buell?

Simple: I no longer own a Buell.

I did Otay Mesa CA to Bellingham WA and back in 3 days on my XB12R a few years back. Wasn't fun, driven by necessity. It shut down on me mysteriously twice during the trip. I also ran the XB from Long Beach CA to Portland OR twice, straight shot each time. Plenty of trips to San Francisco and back the next day too.

The Z is what I ride now, and I'm going to visit friends in Durango so that's why I chose that destination. It's less than 1000 miles so I'll be taking a very scenic route to get there. Shorter route coming home.

Crazy? Maybe a little. I'm in it for the bling bling:

the BB gold is a very tough ride. i missed mine by 2 hours last year and settled for the BB. the scenic route is not a good option for the gold.
best luck, eat right and get good rest before leaving. put all receipts in a plastic bag and make notations of time and mileage on them.

Scenic is the only way to do it when the start point is Long Beach and the destination is Durango. The two places are less than 800 miles apart.

I'll be doing a lot of research before I depart, and sticking to the main highways wherever possible. Still got some gear to buy, so right now I'm aiming for late April but it could change to mid or late May depending on circumstances. Weather will have a lot to do with it also.
