give him the Transporter Speech
Rule number one.... Respect the bike
Number two... Respect the Man (Buell)
Number Three.... if you cant do 1 or 2 give the bike up to someone that will appreciate the history of the ride before you wrap it around a telephone pole.

Iman, take a look at ADV's Face Plant section: http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f= 17 . It puts things in perspective for me to read about other people's misfortunes and accidents, reminds me that the human body is NOT indestructible, just like the website others have posted. Also, on the railroad they teach us that accidents are the result of a combination of factors, behavior being one of the factors.

The 39 YO in the lower 1/2 of the page was a good friend of mine.
I carried his coffin at his funeral.
He is gone but not forgotten.
He was always wearing his gear and he was always conservative when riding
The whole incident proves that, no matter how careful you are, anything can happen at any time.
Footnote: The driver was charged with vehicular homicide. He was found not guilty.
Ride safe,
Chris C

I had a 4 square inch patch of road rash on my forearm when a friend pushed me off of my bicycle in college... then I was camping for two weeks and that thing was a pain in the arse to dress and clean every day in the Blue Ridge... I can't imagine the nastiness of that mush road rash entails... what do people wear for pants in hot hot weather... perforated leather? I usually just wear jeans but might reconsider.

Some people are what they are. There isn't much you can do except remind him that it's uncool, it's dangerous and you want him to be around long enough to drink legally.

Then keep a good distance behind him when you ride together so that, if something happens, you've got time to stop yourself.

I'm sorry. I've had friends like that. Love them to death, but they are trouble. He's got something driving him that won't let him listen to reason. Uh, don't ask how I know that.

You're a good friend for trying.

Sacramento gets real hot at times. 110+. When it's that hot out, I'm in the pool, lake, or ocean. When I have to ride in that kind of heat, I wear shorts! and I ride REAL cautious and slow like.

Perf. leather would be a luxury to afford but it would work well I assume.

I've got a buddy who nearly lost the entire left side of his body. He's rode bikes since he could walk. Dipshit had a great idea of doing 90mph around a 90 while doing a wheelie! The guard rail stopped that stupidity. He was in the Coast Guard at the time stationed in HI. CG kicked him out. He's had years of PT. We now call his left arm floppie. He still rides and still acts like a dipshit!

I cant' remember his name but the Editor and writer for I believe Sport Rider Magazine was an experienced rider with gear when he had his accident and now he is partially paralized! BE cautious out there accidents happen to everyone. March of 03 I unfortunatley watched a riding buddy die on the side of the road! He was riding a stand up wheelie at about 100mph passing a line of cars when one of the cars decided to turn left into a driveway! He brought the front wheel down but could not get slowed down in time and he hit the back of the car sending him flying into the air and then landing on his head on the shoulder of the highway! He was not wearing gear and he was driving like an idiot. I being smarter did not pass the line of cars and stayed back but I had to watch the whole thing unfold! After that incident I completly changed my whole outlook on wearing gear and riding responsively! Please Be careful! You don't want to ever see a friend die in front of you while you can do nothing!

Hex, seriously, get some mesh pants. Once you're moving, it's like you're not even wearing them.

Now, stopped at a light is a different story...

About those gross pics: isn't it strange how the real thing looks less real than it does in the movies?

Best cure: get road rash. I found out the hard way why wearing jeans is big no-no. Most painful injury ever (and I'm an ER room veteran).

I found out the hard way why wearing jeans is big no-no.

That's why I either wear my full suit, or shorts. Jeans are worse than shorts because they give you the illusion of protection.

I don't do the shorts thing anymore, but I have on occasion, and been very cautious about it. Never on long rides, only to the store and back.

I'll look into mesh this summer.

if you must wear shorts try this way

I wear these under my jeans, they have hard plastic and foam in them and are CE level 1 rated.

I was wearing these last season and will still on the occasions that I know I will be riding hard or probably in the rain too.

overkill? maybe but I'm ok with that.

by the way they deflect the heat from the bike rather well and still flow air when moving, but if you aren't used to shin guards they may frustrate you for a bit. (I started playing soccer at the ripe old age of 4 but back then it was more like amoeba ball)

I didn't even see that link when I posted last time. He ain't nothing buy Buzzard food now! I'd show that picture to your boy. If that doesn't change his mind nothing will. Everyone thinks they can walk on water until that dreadful day happens...

What would be good protection for feet? When I got hit in Dec. I was wearing H/D riding boots. That Chevy bumper spun my foot completely backwards!

Elf nailed it!:

"Get him to a track!"

The MSF courses are excellent too.

I also like what AKBuell suggests:

"Be a friend, and lead by example. Ride with him, and when he does stupid stuff, leave. Tell him later why you left. "

The following video is very realistic. It happened to me, age 17, when I thought that I was indestructible. Luckily I flew over the hood. A tenth of a second later, I'd have hit the side of the car and been badly hurt, no doubt.
