I wonder if Erik remembers selling this kit. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buell-Buell-RR1000- R-Ex-works_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem414d652971QQ itemZ280471349617QQptZUSQ5fmotorcycles (Message edited by brinnutz on February 27, 2010) |

An RR1000 pre-production race kit sold in 1992? I don't think so, the timing is wrong. And there were only three pre-production race ones ever built, none of which went to Italy. They were all built in the 1985/86 time frame. One went to H-D for Don Tilley, one went to Bartels, and one went to Steve Wentworth if what I know is correct... |

Looking at it again, he doesn't state it went to Italy...Just to an Italian collector (who knows if he bought here or whatever). Anyways, Be cool to see what the REAL story is. |

lets see he wants $176,139.23. I know I love history and Buells for that matter but almost 200k that's a little steep? |

Erik Buell responded to this on his FB page.....
quote:Heck no I can't remember exactly. But I think it was just a left over RR1000 frame. We definitely didn't keep any works race bikes around in the 80's for nostalgia's sake , everything was sold. So by '92 all we would have had was a spare frame left over. I don't know where the guy got the motor because when we built them in 1987/88 H-D only had 46 ... See Moreleft. We had to buy three or four motors from dealers so we could make the 50 required by the AMA to compete in 1988 (they changed the number to 200 after Scott Z won the championship and all the Ducati riders complained...some things never change). All the RR1000's had lighter frame tubing in some areas than the RR/RS1200. I think they had .035 wall on the short crosstubes, and we went to .049 everywhere on the 1200's.

Also available on fleaBay UK with more photos: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Buell-RR1000-R-ex-works_W0QQ itemZ280469651027QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motorcycles ?hash=item414d4b3e53#ht_500wt_1182 For sale my ex-works Buell RR1000R due to a change of my plans. I am happy to accept £100,000 for this bike but in reality I am looking for a realistic offer for the 2nd Harley Davidson engined Buell produced. This is a real piece of American racing motorcycle history and was used by Buell Racing from 1986. This bike has one of the two a none VIN chassis and predates the official run of 50 Buell RR1000's Battle twins produced in 1987 and 1988. This bike was purchased as a kit of parts directly from Erik Buell in 1992 (less wheels, forks and brakes) by an Italian collector who then built the bike to it's current specification in 1993. The bike was then raced in the italian BOT (Battle of the Twins) of that year under the CR&S banner. I have correspondance between Erik Buell and the original purchaser detailing the sale; the chassis specification and the supply of the Buell prepared Harley Davidson XR1000 race engine fitted. This bike is top spec inside and out built with Brembo billet brakes and race discs, Ohlins suspension; front forks are GP type and rear shock was built for Buell race team, Technomagnesio wheels. The Engine has been completely refreshed since then receiving new pistons, titanium valves, race springs, rods and crank rebuild. Cams are Storz and the heads are full follow and twin plugged. Carbs are 43mm flat Mikuni. Exhaust is Buell works. This bike rides very well and feel like a race bike should, short and with quick steering and the engine runs perfectly. Also available are parts to return the bike back to period specification c1986/7 Plesse only contact me if you are seriously interested in purchasing this bike. |

I posted it on Erik's F/B page just to ask. Tom B found another Buell at a show in Wichita that the guy was saying it was the First Buell prototype. Tom B has pictures. Strange that this guy raced Buells and didn't know Court. |

If it was it was Johnny Mikosh. The Prototype is in Illinois. |

The bike on the right is the first 1000 and also the prototype. Long time John Mikosh is the owner. Hope to see him at homecoming this year.

I would be interested in seeing the SN on the motor. I might have a list here of VINs linked to SN. This guy got a frame and then built a bike around it. |

I made and inquiry on the UK site regarding the bike's provenance, got this back: "Thats not what Erik says in letters to the original buyer. these letters are signed by Erik himself on buell company headed paper. I have put 2 of these letters in the add one concerns the chassis and the other concerns the engine purchase." |

Actually P47b, what he said was it was the first xb prototype, but h/d management squashed it because it was too much like a sportster. Said he raced for buell and they gave him this bike for his racing efforts. i was mildly amused by all this. Since he didn't know who Court Canfield or Brankin Brehmer were. Asked him what team he raced for he said buell, couldn't remember the name of his mechanic and didn't seem to know much about racing. but he was wearing a buell shirt and had a few magazines. The bike looks like a custom built frame with a blast swing arm and xb wheels and engine. Told me he has turned down 30,000 dollrs for it. |

Posted by Erik Buell on his FaceBook page:
quote:Y'know, as I rack my feeble brain, I think this actually may be more right than I first remembered. More than just the spare frame, I think the engine may have been the back- up one from the bike for Scott Z. I forgot about that race bike, which was not one of the first but did have some special stuff. Too many years.

Steve has posted copies of the original letters on the eBay ad, with serial numbers. Still can't get my mind around the $155K in these tough economic times. Good luck to him. |

William.. didn't mean for it to sound like that. between my wife talking and me driving i might have mixed up some details. The early Xb's didn't have oil in swingarm? Learned something new today (Message edited by tom_b on February 28, 2010) |

Tom, they did...It's just on the other side of the bike. The hole you see is for the belt to pass through. (Message edited by brinnutz on February 28, 2010) |

2002 XBike? I don't think so. Mfg date may be '02, but the first XBikes to hit the dealership floors were tagged as 2003 XB9R. |

The earliest that they hit the dealership showrooms was April 2002 if I recall correctly. |
