BTW, anyone who has never been to Savanna should really go. It is an awesome place! It is home to the largest contiguous historic district in the country. Savanna is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the country. A large part of Savanna is much as it has been for hundreds of years. It is true places like St. Augustine, Plymouth, Jamestown were settled earlier, but they either disappeared, were abandoned or functioned only as military outposts for some part of their lives. You really get a sense of the past in Savanna. New York City, Boston, Baltimore, are old too, but most of what was originally built is long since gone. Annapolis is a neat place too. Disclaimer: I am talking about European settlements on the continent, not trading outposts in the Caribbean or native cities that were well established before Europeans showed up. |

I've never been to Savannah, other than to speed through on a Buell, but I've heard incredible things about the city and would love to visit. |

Try Orlando Florida. From swamps to sky scrapers. Kind of BD to AD explosion of growth(that is Before Disney and After Disney). Savanna is indeed a beautiful city. My family met there for a three day get together several years back. Tour the old brick forts if you can. Very interesting history in that. |

Flickr'd & Google'd Savanah. Definately on my short list of places to visit now. Looks like a beautiful, pre-industrial freeze-frame. I suppose that Las Vegas is a best example / proto typical post-industrial city, which leaves it to be a service industry era city, literally... Pre / Mid industrial areas have a greater history and appeal. I asked about post-industrial because it is such a cultural / structural watermark in our history. Sort of like our "Great Wall [of China]", castles, what-not. Makes me wonder what the next phase will look like. Maybe / probably, it's right under my nose and I don't know how to recognize it because we're in the middle of it. Suburban spread I guess. |
