Yes, I think it will come down to what kind of fuel you use, the cost of that fuel and how much of that fuel it will take to run the Bloombox. I'll bet if everyone used one and say used natural gas or propane to fuel then the fuel prices would probably skyrocket up.
Ebay installed five Bloom Boxes nine months ago, and they fuel about 15 percent of its San Jose campus, said CEO John Donahoe in the 60 Minutes interview. “It’s been very successful thus far,” Mr. Donahoe says, adding that the company has saved $100,000 in electricity costs already.
The above conveniently ignores the cost of the equipment itself. For the referenced ebay installation, not including the required installation labor or civils work, equipment cost would be between $3,500,000 to $4,000,000.
At a savings of $100,000 over a period of nine months, the payback, not even figuring in any time-value of money, will be ...
Except of course that you and I are probably funding much of these projects as our government grants the wealthy users of it huge tax incentives to do so.
Will it be worth the "investment"? I sure hope so.
Blake, the stable owners & horse breeders said much the same thing when the automobile first appeared. I'm happy to reserve judgement til we can see if it's a viable road to travel.
I think the technology is sound. Its a bit early to hype it like eBay is though.
When production ramps up, and the costs come down (manufacturer claims $2000 is the residential pricepoint) then I'll get excited. After all, 2000 is cheap for a whole-house generator, which is effectively what this is.
These could solve the issue of updating the electric grid, as power would be produced at the point it is used. But what about the gas pipeline infrastructure? Can in handle the increased volume?

Quote...The venture capitalists have put about $400-million into this, making it their biggest gamble ever.
Their biggest gamble since the dot com fiasco. Sometimes I get the feeling that venture capitalists are just looking for the quick buck. Will this be the same?
