Ok, here's the deal: I have an 09 xb12ss. At 1000 miles I did my service, and I replaced both the engine and the prim/tran with 60w full synthetic Amsoil. I put one quart in the tran/prim, and 2.5 quarts in my oil tank. The other day I was out riding and my oil light flickered on and then quickly off 2 times. When I got where I was going, I checked the oil level on the dipstick...NOTHING!!! Immediately I proceeded to the nearest auto parts store and bought a quart of vtwin mobil1. So I did my service Thursday, changed both my fluids, and only 1.5 quarts came out of my engine. I checked the oil level after a nice ride tonight, and the oil is already half way down my dipstick. I have not seen anything like this in my 7+ years of aftermarket harley parts. There is no oil spots on the ground, and she is not smoking(burning the oil). Where is my oil going, and has anyone else had this experience? Even my master mechanic friend is baffled... THANKS! |

Some modern oils don't smoke very much...but my guess.....check your primary level |

Is it possible that it is only leaking while the bike is mobile? A fine fracture/broken seal etc could leak while the oil is hot and temporarily reseal itself while the bike is stationary and the oil cools and becomes more dense? |

It is common for a V Twin to consume oil upon break in periods. Buells are very finicky as you probably know. Mine will breath out until it is at its "comfort level". I'd just keep an eye on the oil level and top it off before you ride. |

Isn't 60W a little stiff for these modern engines? Hopefully you warm it up really carefully. |

That's a big problem. In the year and a half I had an XB, I never had to add a drop of oil to it. Same thing with my 1125r I have now. There are only 2 options where the oil can go in an air cooled engine, leak out or burn. if the underside of the engine and swing arm aren't covered in oil, I bet your spark plugs will be. Being a fresh engine, my guess is the rings didn't seat properly. |

I have checked the primary/trany level, it is fine, and at the rate that I am loosing oil I would see something smoking. There is absolutely no oil leaking anywhere that I can see on the bike, and I have taken some of the different covers off because I am baffled by this. A very good friend of mine is a master mechanic for hd, and he works mainly on the buells. He has not seen anything like this either. Has anyone else had any experience with this? And Swampy, I let it warm up before I ride, and I make sure she is completely up to temp before I get on her hard. Also, the bike has just shy of 5000 miles on it now. |

60w is the optimum oil for south florida, with the heat and the traffic. any way the weight of the oil isn't the issue here... I just need help finding out where it is! As I mentioned, I have been in aftermarket hd parts for 7 years now, I know a lot of what I am doing, and I have just never encountered this before. |

The air cleaner is beautiful and clean! I have checked all of the obvious things, and now the only obvious thing is that there is a significant loss of oil, but it isn't leaking, burning, or puking out of any orifices |

The oil might be draining back into the crankcase. Mine does that and the only way I get consistent oil readings is if I check it while the bike is idling. Your '09 has the same oiling system as my '08 so that procedure is worth a try. Whoa wait a minute! I missed the part where your oil light came on. You might have a bigger problem (Message edited by boltrider on February 21, 2010) |

If the primary seal is blown it'll pump engine oil into the primary case. Also, do you check the level on the stand or holding the bike upright? I always do mine immediately after switching off, when it's warm, holding it up. Maybe the oil pixies came & siphoned it out during the night. |

If you have no oil burning(you did check the exhaust?) you have no oil leaking, and your oil keeps needing to be refilled? There could only be one place it is going and that would be your transmission/primary. Have you checked the level there yet? |

one other way out idea, the bag is part of the swing arm, is the arm filling up, casting flaw leaking into a pocket in the arm? loss of oil pressure even momentary is reason to investigate, I am not familiar with the newer Tstorm engines, that oil pump is way different I too wonder if its in the sump.. |

I'm speaking out from what I have read on here. I can not find any of the posts to back up what I am saying. If I remember right there were a few who put a synthetic oil in there primary and I think it was the seal that gave out on the the primary or the stator quit. Synthetic in engine good, synthetic oil in primary bad. Again It's been awhile from the last post I had read. As suggested above check your primary for extra oil. No leaks, it's going someplace. And from what you are saying it's not getting burnt off.. |

Could a bad exhaust valve seal let it burn that much oil and still let the plugs stay clean? If it were leaking that much you would know it. The swing arm (at least on my 06) isn't boxed in except for where the oil tank is, so there's no place for the oil to leak and hide as was suggested. You say you've checked the primary level, so it isn't leaking there. Sounds to me like it must be getting burned. I would start with a compression test or a leak down test just to make sure the valves and rings are not the culprits. |

Tep, I had a similar problem with my '05 City-X when it was new. I did the first oil change in the winter and put in non syn HD 20-50 per the book. Well I bought six quarts at that time, so when I got to 4,000 miles I went at it with a new filter and 2.5 quarts of the 20-50. (I know that is not your issue) It was now april in Tennessee. The temps went up into the mid 70'sF. In a 500 mile weekend of playing in the mountains I was riding home all was well. Just as I turned around on the divided highway for my driveway the oil light came on. I shut it off and coasted in. Pulling the dip stick there was nothing on it! I panicked, I poured in a quart of oil, still nothing on the stick! Another half quart and it was at the bottom of the add mark. I was freeking out. I called the dealership, did some research(before I knew about BadWeB)in the service manual finding that I had the wrong weight of oil in it, plus the break in was not complete. I put in non syn HD 60 for the summer and all was fine after that. It did use about a pint the next 1,000 or so then it seemed to seal up and never lost any more. I ran it to 13,000 when I sold it. I have read about some bikes ending up with the ring gaps being lined up and having an oil loss problem. As new as your bike is I would carry an extra quart and run it a few more thousand miles before having a warranty tear down to "check" like they offered to do to mine. Just check it at every other gas stop, carry a little to keep it on the two bottom X's and run the crap out of it when you can. The 60W is proper for your climate, but not being completely broken in(takes about 8-10,000 miles), and often stuck in hot Florida traffic I can see where it would use maybe a quart to 1,000 miles for now. Remember, when you get a chance run the snot out of it, they like that, and it will help. My '06 Uly used a pint per 1,000 miles until it got to 8,000 or so. Since it has been about a pint to a 3,000 mile change. I now use Rotella T non syn per weight class for the temperature range in the book. I stopped using HD non syn when they thought it became worth $12.00 per quart. I went to Mobil 1 V twin oil for a while but my engine was noticeably noisier with it. |

Oh yeah, the City-x never smoked, there was a film in the air box base, but not wet, the filter was fine. The plugs were normal, and I too could find no signs of where it went. I was thinking someone stole some! Where it went really bugged me for the next couple of oil changes, but all was well afterward. I was just glad that I did not have a perfectly good engine taken apart to find nothing where that could possibly have caused a whole new set of problems. |

P47b, The Synthetic oil that is bad to use in the transmission is hypoid gear oil as it had an additive that caused the stator windings to deteriorate. That additive is not present in the engine oils. |
