Never had an oil problem with my XB9S. Question for you, and in no way questioning your sanity: Are you SURE you put in 2.5 quarts. i.e., Is it possible that you put the 1 quart in the primary and 1.5 in the swingarm and then lost count? I only ask because I've done this type of thing before. It gets easier to do every year... |

Thank you all for all of your help. And rest assured i did check and then double check all of the things that you warned or asked about... BEFORE i posted this thread. I am going to keep a vigilant eye on the oil level, and if necessary i will take it in under warranty. thanks again! |

Mr. Grumpy, there are those who feel it's fine to use automotive 20W50 in their bikes, and those who think that there is a difference in composition, and that bike oil should be used in bikes, especially air-cooled v-twins. I am not a chemical engineer, and I can't tell you for sure what is right, but I can tell you, as an aside, that the automotive filters are not the best for a bike (this comes from Purolator filter company: "PureONE oil filters are designed for vehicles, not bikes. Because of PureONE's high efficiency, the motorcycle oil pump may not be able to handle the pressure."), and that bike engines do not run the same as car engines, except as a general, internal combustion principle. But one thing I can tell you is that there is more than enough mis-information here on the web and yes, here on badweb (witness the perpetuation of the "synthetic oil bad for primary" issue several posts up) that I am ever-more careful about which sources of information I trust from the web. My non-technical guess is that, given frequent enough changes, the automotive 20w50 mineral would work. Is that non-commital enough for you?! :-) Sorry to pick up on the hi-jack, Teppi, but I thought your questions were as resolved as they could be :-) (Message edited by fahren on February 21, 2010) |

I would suggest running a non-synthetic oil and see if it gets better/worse. I have always run non-synth in my engines and have had no issues. I wouldn't put the "good stuff" in until at least a few thousand miles to let the engine settle in. My uly didn't feel broken in til over 10,000 miles. Same goes for my X1. My Uly ate over a quart of oil in its first 1000 miles. It stopped doing that. Now at 25,000 it keeps all its oil. I'll switch to "the good stuff" this spring I think. |
