I think the previous owner stripped this darn bolt. So should I just try to go to the next bigger size bolt or re-thread with an insert? What size is this stock primary bolt? It seems it'd be cheaper to do the next bolt bigger if I can find out what size this stock one is? Either way, I would need to know in order to get an insert/helicoil. Thoughts, specs, suggestions? |

You did not say what bike but you can go to local auto parts store and they have oversize drain plugs for lots of cars, see if you can match one up. |

1998 S-1W Just came from Checker. They had some metrics and some SAE. Need to figure out what the stock one is sized first. Hoping someone here knew? |

I had an S1 that had the same problem. Found out after i bought it. I just put a Heli-coil in there and never had another problem. I thought about some of the other tricks from the auto parts store but went with the Heli-coil. S1Eric |

Righteous. Yeah I'd prefer the helicoil but heck the kits are $20-30 bucks and all I need is one coil! |

20 bucks is cheaper than an engine case. And it wont fail later if you do it right. Over size drain plugs suck IMO. |

yeah I'm leaning to the helicoil. so if thew bolt is a 1/2-20. Does that mean the 20 is 20mm? What pitch do I need and what torque should I use once I get the helicoil installed? I'm wondering if I should try a diff torque value this time? I hate steel into aluminum. I remember having to do a helicoil on a Ducati 900ss kickstand bolt that was bolted into the engine case. 20 should stand for threads per inch if I remember correctly |

Yes, a 1/2-20 description would be half inch diameter 20 threads per inch. I torque the engine and primary drain plugs to 12lb/ft. Also the thread sealer recommended acts as a semi thread locker too. You can also safety wire them if you're really paranoid. |

This is only one data point, so take it with a grain of salt... but I heli coiled a stripped drain plug for a friends SV-650, and it was a chronic but low grade leaking problem thereafter. A tim-sert might be a better seal. It's not a disaster with the heli coil, you just need good fresh crush washers. But with the tim-sert, it might be more like stock, and seal regardless if the crush washer is fresh or not. Just one data point... get 32 more observations and it will be statistically significant. |
