Alright you techies. You have got to be more helpful than the call center and the operator from regions that I cant spell or pronounce. I have a new netbook. Yep, I love it. Except for the tap pad in the center of the device. It is running Windows 7. It is a Toshiba netbook. It is driving me crazy. Any help would be appreciated. How do I turn off the pad and the associated right and left buttons? Thanks in advance... |

I am firing up my Win7 Laptop to check, but in XP you could do it near the clock, you just right click the icon and select disable. |

According to a post on the Microsoft Technet, you may need to install Toshiba Synaptics software.
quote:You need to install the synaptics drivers for your touchpad. You can find the drivers from: 1. Toshiba website 2. Synaptics website 3. Update your Windows 7. (I loved this about Windows 7, it automatically detected and installed my synaptics drivers) Once that is done, you can to control panel and then click on "mouse". The last tab in that will be the tab for synaptic touchpad. In there you will find the option you are looking for.

I'm looking at Windows XP right now, but Windows 7 shouldn't be substantially different. Open the Control Panel and find the option for your mouse... It's under "Printers and Other Hardware" in XP. Clicking that brings up a screen where you can click on "Mouse". Clicking on that brings up your mouse properties dialog box. This may vary by specific device, but I have a tab called "Device Settings". On that tab you have a list of your pointing devices and the ability to Enable, Disable, or set Settings. You should be able to Disable your touch pad with that. I assume you are planning to use some sort of external mouse. My wife's laptop (Windows 7) can do that without having to disable the touch pad, but it sounds like you are just annoyed with the touch pad. |

There should also be a setting in that same mouse area that allows you to disable the touch pad when an external mouse is attached, I think this is new for Win7. If you are talking about turning off the tap features to select, that should also be in the mouse settings area of the control panel. |

Froggy thanks that was the cure. Greg_e the optical mouse is plugged into a standard data port and was auto sensed. To all that chimed in. I really appreciate it. Can't you disable it in the BIOS? |
