These is taken from the Z board, twice removed from another: The pneumatic tire was invented by John Boyd Dunlop in 1888 for use on push-bikes. Boyd also invented the word “pneumatic”. Slick tires offer more grip in the wet than treaded tyres up to the point at which they aquaplane. Modern sports bike tires don’t contain any natural rubber. Front tires disperse water at three times the rate of rear tires. When cornering, 75 per cent of a bikes grip comes from the front tire. The GS in GSX-R denotes four cylinders with overhead valves. The X means four valves per cylinder and the R is for race replica. Vespa means wasp. Cucciolo (the name of the first Ducati) means puppy. Contrary to popular opinion, the motorcycles used in Easy Rider have not both been lost or destroyed. I remember Street Hawk. Like Knight Rider, but with a motorcycle, and I don't think it talked. I DO remember it had a built in laser, which is WAY cooler than some dumb "turbo boost".  I didn't know it only lasted 13 episodes. That might explain why I can only remember one scene of one episode (which had a LASER!). I call BS on the bulletproof Shoei though. The thing about the NR750 was it didn't perfrom as well as Honda had hoped for. I remember reading tha magz and they all basically said the hype was not in the machine. It turned out numbers that were similar to standard V4 motors. Yes I need to ride, BAAAAD. Between school and weather it hasn't happened much lately | ||

not knowing for sure jon but it would seem to me that your diving into a corner putting more grip on the front and because of this, you need a larger tire to help compensate for that. | ||

Contrary to what is stated above, BMW did NOT discontinue building boxers in 1986. They discontinued the 1000cc boxers but continued building the 800cc and 650cc twins. Customer demand brought back the 1000cc twin, and everyone who THOUGHT they had a "Collector's Item Final Edition" 1000cc boxer twin was given a free Schuberth-made BMW System II helmet as compensation. | ||

The rear tire is larger in order to dissipate the greater heat generated by the combination of driving force + Side force + braking force. Front tires only deal with side force and braking force. | ||

A tidbit about the Honda oval piston. In '87 I went to Honda to train the engineers on use of FEA tools. I got to see the development shop. An amazing place. One of the most interesting challenges they had was to engineer and produce an oval piston ring. The challenge was to get even sealing around the ring circumference. The answer was to create a ring that had an alloy variation around the circumference. Very difficult and very expensive. | ||
