I know, wife and I need new phones also. She just wants a replacement for her ENV2.The ENV3 is mostly the same but needs a data plan. That is complete crap! Seems like all decent phones need a data plan? Thats all i need is 20 bucks more a month. Usually complaining to customer service gets you some help but they didn't budge very frustrating. |

Hell I would get a data only plan if it existed. My phone makes only two or 3 phone calls a month, yet frequently almost hits my 5gb cap. |

the data plan is seperate from the basic plan. I have to purchase the Blackberry data plan at $29.99 a month extra from my phone plan. to me it's worth it to have a data plan because of the email and the web. |

I've been on Verizon a long time. I get 1000 min national and 250 text for just under $50 per month. And I'm month to month. They keep calling me and asking if I want a new phone, and I tell them if I were interested in a data plan, I'd switch to ATT and an iPhone. They haven't called lately. |

What is a "Data Plan"? (I have only had 3 cells phones in the last decade plus, always a basic phone) |

i think that now if you get a phone that has a key board you have to get some kind of data plan. they start at 10 bucks then the next step up as 30 bucks. i dont need all the bells and wistles shure id like to havem it came with the price of my plan. i only really use the internet to check email, look at craigslist and stuff while im at lunch, or looking to kill time. i just think its lame that you have to pay extra to get a nicer phone. yeah some people dont want touch screen and stuff but all thats really left is and old school looking flip phone. |

Yes, being required to purchase a data plan for smart phones is ludicrous, especially if the phone is WiFi capable. Verizon requires the data plan, which covers data use on their 3G network. If you restrict yourself to just using WiFi (and the limits of having to find WiFi hotspots), there should be no need to hit the 3G network for data. I am unaware of any US phone carrier that does not require a data plan for smart phones. Are there any? I'd like to give my business to a US carrier that does not require a data plan. I'd especially like to make a stand against Verizon's requirement of a data plan by taking my business elsewhere; alas, I use Verizon for phone service. LOL! |

When I got my current phone under Sprint, I had no data plan. My phone was useless as a brick without it. Wifi is useless when you are cruising down the highway trying to read badweb. |

Here is a pertinent article posted on Yahoo just today: Yahoo: US Phone Carriers Forced Data Plans Trend In summary, while carriers lower prices for voice plans, lost revenue is recouped by forcing data plans on smartphones and non-smartphones alike. Non-smartphones are phones with any kind of web functionality, most assuredly phones with keyboards. |

I don't give a rats a$$ about 3G data plan. If i am driving i can't surf the net. A lot of places along the highway have wifi, so that is were i stop. Besides using 3g is like going back to dial up. I don't understand why people are choosing to go backwards, and are paying to go backwards. I want to just buy the phone and not pay for the phone over 2 years at the "low price of 29.99" It just wounds like a dam infomercial |

What do you mean? Connection speed? I hate to break it to you, but I am typically pulling 1.2-2 megabits when on 3G. That is about 30x faster than dial up. 4G will be even faster. |

Cyclonedon: Crackberries require the RIM Job (AKA blackberry Data plan), due to their design. Other smart phones (non berry), just need a data plan, not the crackberry service. |

1.2-2 mb is slow I get 12mb download and 5mb upload at home on cable. 3g requires that you live in an area were the phone company will give you 3g coverage. Even verizon does a crappy job where i live. |

I got a 20 megabit connection at home. 2 megabit is more than fast enough for browsing on a phone, and still is good enough to tether to my laptop to do some browsing when I am on vacation. I can still watch Netflix streaming movies just fine with it. About coverage, I usually am on Sprint, and have 3g coverage 90% of the time no matter where I go, and 1x speed coverage 8% of the time, and the remaining 2% I got no data. Then I can change my radio over to Verizon, and usually they would have coverage in that spot. Wifi is nice, but I don't use free unsecured hotspots anymore, its just too risky. Not to mention, depending on where you go its usually the same speed as the 3g anyway. |

I currently have a Sprint/Nextel hybrid phone. I don't need data, a camera or a GPS. I just need a phone. With Verizon coming out with the $69 unlimited talk plan, I just may switch. |
