California turbines frozen in Minnesota wind
quote:Anoka, Chaska and other city residents ask why their newly installed windmills don't spin. Operator says they will be running within two months. . . . The green-energy machines were expected to be spinning before Christmas, but so far their blades have been largely motionless, apparently paralyzed by frigid weather. . . . The refurbished, 115-foot towers had operated on a California wind farm, where they didn't have to worry about cold hydraulic fluid turning to gel and oil lubricants getting too sluggish. . . .
Boy, who knew that lubricants get thick in the cold? The will have them running in two months? I guess that's when the lube thaws. Most of us call it spring. I can't wait until we are reliant on this sort of technologies. We wont be able to light a squiggly light bulb that contains deadly poison, much less heat the house. |

Hahaha . . . interesting. In addition, to this case of the "transplants" with the wrong viscosity, there is a lower range of ambient temps where the rotors are stopped, locked and weather vaned as well. |

Duh, you need to switch to Amsoil synthetic 10w-40 in the winter! |

I liked one of the comments to the article suggesting solar powered heaters for the turbines. |

The morons in DC are still pushing climate change. As D.C. continued to dig out from Snowmageddon and is keeping an eye on another storm system, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was busy making a climate change announcement. NOAA, part of the Department of Commerce, is going to be providing information to individuals and decision-makers through a new NOAA Climate Service office. “More and more, Americans are witnessing the impacts of climate change in their own backyards, including sea-level rise, longer growing seasons, changes in river flows, increases in heavy downpours, earlier snowmelt and extended ice-free seasons in our waters. People are searching for relevant and timely information about these changes to inform decision-making about virtually all aspects of their lives,” the release says. Earlier snowmelt? That would be nice. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2010/02/08/noaa-bliz zard-rearranges-climate-change-announcement/ |

Now, the frozen turbines suck. I always thought that the high tension lines across the great plains would be ideal for wind power. I mean, it IS the grid, and the winds in winter in Nebraska through N. Dakota are powerful in winter. Perhaps vertical rotor turbines are an answer? http://www.mariahpower.com/ Hey, just because the "Climate Change" movement is a scam, doesn't mean we don't need more power. You want electric cars? we need to power them. Just because you're burning coal, natural gas, gravity & atoms to roll down the road, instead of gasoline, diesel, or cooking oil... doesn't mean you aren't using those KW/BTU's. The existing power network is marginal, at best. You can't charge cars with it & still make aluminum & run the net. ( and your lights & hot water &...) I'd ignore any weather related story claiming that "climate change" has a freaking thing to do with it. Period. Also ignore any long term predictions ( multi year ) since we are in a cooling trend, and telling us that (without invoking it as a sign of Global Warming ) doesn't fit the script. It's really sad, too. In this time of global cooling, with the storms & disasters that always happen in such times, we really could use reliable weather science, instead of this militant Lysenkoism. ( note that one of the big lies of the cult is that warm weather is bad! and causes storms, earthquakes, yeti attacks, etc. In all history, that never happens. Go ahead, check. I dare you. ) |

It's the Gore Effect! Aspen should invite him to speak there in October to kick off ski season. But, says NOAA spokesman Justin Kenney, they’re happy to have a chance to educate people about the difference between the climate and the weather. Yep, because that's their job, and people are stupid. ( or did school get even dumber than 7 years back when I got kicked out of the PTA meeting for asking why they still use the "whole word method" in the 21st century? ).....( ok, my parody of the "hooked on phonics" ad where the mom axes "I can just buy these tapes and my 17 year old can finally larn to read? The school never did teach him nothin', must be why he's in jail all the time" did have something to do with my ejection...) |
