So I went to work to set up a time to talk with one of the owners, as I have not been a perfect angel at work lately... and she said to start looking for a new job... no explanation... no trying to work things out. That was the hardest $7.50 an hour I have put in. Right now I am trying to avoid doing something rash... as any job should be better than no job, right? I just feel humiliated at the moment. Shocked and at a loss for what to do? I mean, I know I am better than all of them and everything, for f*** sake, with my expensive technical degree... but right now it feels like a kick in the vagina and I am mystified by her actions... Still no word from job in North Carolina working at the USMC base either... WTF??? |

Char, it sounds as if you are flexible about location, and no doubt flexible about the type of job (within reasonable limits). Hang in there. Can you let us know what you want to do at this point, to see if anyone has some good ideas? |

Hey Chris, Thanks for the encouragement. I have been an unemployed environmental scientist for around 15 months. I have solid management skills too as project manager and department head. I have had roughly 10 interviews in my field in the last year. I would like to go back and maybe get my law degree at some point, work for myself part-time. This field, like almost every other in the recession, has a few jobs with very many people competing for them... so it is stiff competition. I thought my try at a sh** job in the sh** food service industry was a good fit for a temporary job... my being willing to work weekend nights... but I guess not. They would rather keep the 20 year olds who don't stop flapping thier gums long enough to do actual work. I am getting too old for this crap! |

It sounds like now might be the best time of any to persue that law degree! Jump in with both feet and get it done. Then that would give you a brand new path to start down. A path that can lead to you being your own employer. I wish you the best of luck! And remember... having a degree does not make you better than anyone. Not trying to be judgemental, but that statement you made just struck a chord with me for some reason. |

You don't have a cdl do you? If you do, FedEx national ltl is hiring drivers all over the place. It's a $60-$80k plus a year job. |

No. They are eliminating their team opperations, and going to all single drivers doing turn runs or single night lay overs then go back home the next day. Some guys are going from city pick up and delivery to linehaul, so some locations will be hiring city drivers too. The elimination of teams has created 1200 new jobs at FedEx national ltl. I put my app in last week. |

I have been an unemployed environmental scientist for around 15 months. You may want to look in Texas, specifically Houston. The economy is still doing well due to the petrochemical industry, and they need enviro engineers/scientist in that industry. Good luck. |

Hang in there Charlotte. You are too talented and intelligent to give up hope. I don't know, but I suspect that you were let go BECAUSE you were better than the others. YOU WILL FIND SOMETHING BETTER! |

Char, I'd keep looking with the government right now if I were you. Not all Gov't jobs are on the same website. Each branch of the military has a civvie jobs website. |

Thanks Guys. It's not so good as the owner firing me moves in some of the same social circles as I do... so I have to be careful what I say to who. I just think we have a personality conflict and she has been thinking about getting rid of me for at least a few weeks... they hired two more people for training about 10 days ago... and I know we were all scrambling for hours... Either way I plan on packing up and moving to North Carolina after Homecoming next summer... I will not miss the winters or the sh*** job market in Madison one bit! |

Charlotte I feel your pain. I graduated a couple of months ago with my Masters's in Public Administration with a health care emphasis and have been struggling to find a job. I am over educated for some stuff, under experienced for others...and when one job comes open there are over 200 applications for one thing. So my couple suggestions are ....if you have a workforce center in your town, go see them. I utilize the pikes peak workforce center in colorado springs, and my counselor works specifically with Veterans...which helps because he understands the training we had in the military. Next have a few people look at your resume and be ready to tweek it a bit, depending on what your applying for. Other thing that I did, was take money out of my savings to join a gym...it helps get rid of the frustration and lack of self esteem which I have had lately. Also when you get a interview...and even if you don't get the job, make sure you send a thank you note to them for taking the time to see you....lastly...well...I guess patience is the best thing....As everyone keeps telling me that job will eventually come...more importantly that "career"...best of luck to you....I will keep positive thoughts for both of us,....Lynn |

We have a civil engineer working for us right now cutting 2" squares of carpet. He's heading back to school for a degree in accounting, which studies show is a field all set to skyrocket. He actually has other plans for the degree (self-run horse camp with his wife). But yeah, lots of college degrees going to waste right now. |

I hate to hear this Charlotte. Where In NC have you looked besides "marine land", If you want to look down here later this year stop by I'm just west of Wilmington in leland. The beaches are minutes away from here, and there is a lot of environmental engineering / consulting goes on here (NC is funny about wet lands and their conservation) I can provide a base to look from in this area, if you want |

Don't feel bad. I was laid off from Sprint after working in the IT field for nine years last March. Moved from California back to Pennsylvania to be closer to family. Could not find any IT jobs in my area. I am now an Apprentice Carpenter erecting scaffolding at coal fired power plants in Western PA. Filthy physical job but the pay is decent but hell of a waste of an IT degree and experience. Oh well. Happy freakin Groundhog day from Punxsy Phil. |

Bless you, go do something spectacular now, you are free, I wish I was in your shoes. You can ask me about it at Homecoming, you will get a laugh out of it, but it probably wouldn't be appropriate for you to hear it now. Go do what moves your soul. I know a fellow that makes it a point to not work anywhere for more then 5 years, he was an IRS accountant, and is now a CFO for a bus company I visit, and has worked for many accounting firms. So go, do something great, also something to think about is to move to where you want to live, then look for a job, instead of the other way around. |

Do what You gotta Do Char... It may be worth while to try to talk through the problem in a few days in hope of a resolution. Please, don't make a rash call and just quit. Jobs are hard to come by. I know, I've been there too many times myself. If the situation is hopeless for what ever reason, try not to beat yourself up. Just put the energy into moving on with life and something new. I'm sure something will pop up to get you through these times. Have Faith... By the way, it was nice talking to you on the phone. I think it helped you to vent a bit. If you want to talk about it some more call me...I want to talk to you again anyway soon. And like I said, if you have a little more time on you hands, you know what I am talking about Jason |

Job change ranks up there with death of a loved one on life-stress indexes. I'm sorry. North Carolina is good place for knowledge workers & financial industry. Morehead City, NC, must be growing: client wants to build new apartments there. Western NC has some of best-est motorcycling roads. Greenville, SC, is home to many large scale engineering companies, like Jacobs & headquarters to global engineering-contractor Fluor. Reading down this thread, perhaps you and supv-lady both knew job there was ending before Subject meeting. And, intuitively & bravely, you called it. |

One door closes, garonteed you'll find another one open. I left the MC sales biz, returned to restaurant work (waiting tables again) and I found that I'm generally satisfied, doing OK keeping up with bills, etc. After 4 1/2 years doing my best to sell HD and Buell, I'm much happier getting back to what I've done most of my life, which is about anything in a restaurant. My skill set and temperament works best where I'm at now. Sure I get frustrated with things from time to time, but at the end of the day I still come home and rest easy. I feel for my old buds still hard at it trying to sell bikes in this economy. It's easier to sell a hand-cut ribeye for $18.99 than a Softail for $18,999 nowadays... Andre Tolstoy once said "Time and perseverance are the greatest warriors." Keep on keepin on, sweetie- you're a rolling stone, after all...

Char, It looks like funding went through yesterday for Lejune water project in NC. Big news release with both senators and several congress people showing up. Bill is named after a little girl who died after being exposed on base. Very sad story, we need to treat veterans better than that! Maybe it'll work out anyway. Keep trying! |
