There is a really intense Death Metal scene around Alberta; man, some of the Deathfest shows in Lethbridge have been freakin' awesome, with bands like Dead Jesus and (perhaps the best Death Metal band name ever), Bitchsplitter. Their bass player, Joe, wound up with my ex, so the name of the band IS appropriate.........
I think it's more the case that the genre "Metal" has more sub-genres than any other type of music out there. Just a few examples...
Heavy Metal Speed Metal Death Metal Cheese Metal (Glam) Goth Metal Thrash Metal Industrial Metal Rap Metal Nu Metal Christian Metal Stoner Metal Funk Metal Drone Metal Power Metal Symphonic Metal the list goes on...
Ahh, just the sound of Lemmy's bass is enough to make anyone want to listen to metal.
Metal is a broad word for the genre. Like Rock n Roll, there's so many sub-genres it's almost impossible to list them all.
Look at R&B. Rhythm and Blues, am I right? Then why is it I go into a record shop and all I see in the R&B section is rap and hip hop? Because there's sub-genres of R&B that rap or hip hop can be listed under.
It's really more of a 'Ear of the Beholder' thing, what some people think one thing is can be something completely different to the other.
I'm not particularly a Metal fan about the only thing in the genre I listen to with any regularity is Motorhead's, The Ace of Spades.
However a Greek friend introduced me to this band, Nightwish, they're from Finland. (very cosmopolitan hey, a greek & Brit in France discussing music from Finland)
They do a fairly wide variety of Rock, including a cracking version of Gary Moore's Over the Hills & Far Away.
