Today's high was supposed to be 72, I took my shirt off while washing my car to work on my tan. Only drawback is I gotta drive at least 4 or 5 hours to ski. |

Car read 33 in Tarpon Springs this morning. Those boys diving for the cross, yesterday, during the Epiphany celebration had it rough. |

Had breakfast, ran the snowblower, gonna take a nap. Then I'll wake up, have lunch, run the snowblower again, and take another nap. Fluffy snow. Should get some wind to go with it later. |

So far here in Huntsville Alabama, we have a bout 1/16 of an inch of snow... and people are loosing their minds... They closed local schools today for... get this... wind chill. Plus, there "might" be an inch or 2 of snow through the day. OH THE HORROR!!! My daughter's day-care closes at 11:30 today, so I at least get to spend half of a day with her instead of working! |

Here is what it looks like from my office window:
This is our lake (pond) at the office. There is usually a big fountain spouting in the middle, but they shut it down so it would freeze up. (Message edited by RATyson on January 07, 2010) |

Ladybird deciding if I should be allowed up the driveway. Little white spots are snow in the air.
First sign of trouble - frozen bridges
Just watched that car in the middle lane slide to a stop.
Maybe not the right tires for the job. Snow turns to ice as you step on it.
Stopped by my former Buell dealership to jump on a deal on a Buell helmet and shirt. The Dragon was covered in ice but the fountain was still running.
Thirty miles of skating around sometimes with both feet down, cars were sliding into ditches, the snow wasn't more than an inch or so, but with temperatures at 31F to 32F it packed into instant ice. Arrived at my destination to pick up a truck with a frozen over beak!
Uly frosted over, tucked in the back of a truck to slide fifty miles back to my shop at 30 mph. A sixteen foot long box truck with dual wheels does not go much better than a Uly with half used Pilot Road II's.
Overall, not a great day to be out on the bike. All of this slushy ice is supposed to freeze solid and stay that way until Monday or Tuesday. |

The first time I've ever seen the ground frozen solid here in Kilgore, TX was this morning. It was 17oF. Vern (Etenuly), Awesome looking dog you have there! Geez that's a huge chain! Looks new too. Please imagine yourself in your dog's place and consider the feeling of having to carry and drag that massive chain around all day long, day after day, year after year. Would you please consider replacing that logging/towing chain with a lighter one. Heck, I'll send one to you if you cannot spare the change. Ladybird will really appreciate it. She's a wonderful looking dog. (Message edited by blake on January 08, 2010) |

Ladybird is just over a year and a half old. She is like a Buell, Massive torque! She loves to run to the end of her chain as fast as she can hitting into her collar, where it jerks her around to the other direction. I thought she was going to kill herself doing this, but it is fun for her. She does it just for sport not once but back and forth many many times. She broke the first chain she had within a couple of days, it was one we used for our lab when she was outside. We then bought a bit heavier one. She broke it in about two weeks. We then moved up to the heaviest one we could get in a dog chain in a pet store. It took nearly a month for her to have all of the links stretched long and nearly flat. She broke that one when it would not flex anymore. So far this one has held up. You may not like this either, but I have her hooked to a 5' tractor back blade bucket with the spikes in the ground. She popped a three foot dog anchor out of the ground when it was dry like concrete in one day. I put in a three foot screw type anchor, she broke it off by bending the end of it back and forth so much. She is a great dog, when a little more of the puppy is out of her she will get trained to be with me while I am working. She will be off a leash like my old black lab is. She is a powerful little ball of high speed loving. One night she got loose I was in my office on the BadWeB when it was a pitch black night. I shut the lights off, stepped outside, pulled the door shut, and was promptly knocked on my ass by a stealth dog flying through the air for a hug. I never saw or heard her coming, I was just laying on the ground getting licked by a monster I could not even see. I appreciate your concern, but she has earned her way up to this chain. We have a twelve acre farm/business property and are surrounded by farms. It is a great place for her and our three other dogs. She gets treated well and plenty of attention. |

I also had to put my collie on a heavy chain. He would work the chain so hard it would wear the links till they broke. He always wanted to be outside no matter the weather. |

Vern, I hear you on the junky chain issues. All chains are far from being equal. The inferior quality and material grade of the chain is to blame for the failures you noted, not the size. Pet store chains are pure junk. What you want is a lifting rated chain, 0.22" dia, grade 80, working load = 2,100 LB; since it is lifting rated, the breaking strength will be at least five times that, so over 10,000 LBs. I guarantee you that chain will last a lifetime or three. Here's a link (pun intended ) http://www.mcmaster.com/#lifting-chain/=5ae6ep I see you have a short lighter weight lead. Good idea that. |

Also, if the running to the limit behavior is the issue, putting a spring or shock absorber into the mix will help a lot as well. But the best will be when you can get her trained. Please don't wait or put it off. It isn't fair to the dog. They don't live very long and they are SOOO much happier when they have a good pack leader to keep them balanced. I don't think dogs exhibit that behavior for fun. In fact I'm sure of it. Please don't think that they are enjoying it. They are objecting to being tethered and are trying to bust loose. With time, you can easily discourage and put an end to that bad behavior. How? One of those vibe collars can work wonders. Don't feed her if she exhibits that behavior, not until she calms down. In fact she should be sitting passively, calmly, and respectfully when you serve food to her. And never ever give her affection if she is misbehaving like that or in any other way or even if she is excited. Only reward with affection the type of energy/behavior that you want. Also, please don't misread the jumping as loving and playful. It is not. It may seem puppy fun loving now, but it can EASILY turn into problematic dominance and aggression. Please don't ever accept anything but complete respect from your dog. I cannot recommend the Dog Whisperer enough. He is very enthusiastic about large powerful breeds. I don't want to come across as a know-it-all lecturing jackass. I've just seen personally what a HUGE improvement and joy it is for both me and our dog to have a well-behaved balanced dog, and I'm very enthused to let others in on the revelation. Thanks again. I know most chain properties fairly well, and I know what you mean. This is my first puppy of many, over many years, that has required industrial chain. Having owned frame straighting machines, selling chains for truck loading work, trailer and tow dolly safety chain sales, heavy equipment, boom truck, crane repairs, also involving straps, cables, webbing and such I have a good idea what sizing and strength requirements are for many applications. The measurement on this particular 36" long lead chain is 7/32" = .22 at .47 pounds per foot. Accordingly, that is exactly what you have recommended. Perhaps the problem is her big ass stance makes her relatively small size look bigger than she is, thus making the chain loom large in the picture. I just don't want her to get out on the highway and get hurt. |
