I've already bought a new Uly which I'll be getting acquainted with this spring when I move back to the states. I'm being really tempted, though, by the 1125R firesale going on. I'm wondering, for those who own multiple bikes, how much more expensive will it be to maintain two? (I own one metric bike now). My incentives for buying two are something like this:
* The bargain price of Buells now, of course
* The possibility of looming parts shortages. If one bike goes down for parts I'll still have the other.
* I did a couple of insurance quotes, and it seems that liability only for two bikes will be just a few hundred a year, but comp and col on just one would run me over $2000. In a way, a second bike would be sort of like an insurance plan, and would pay for itself assuming I don't destroy both bikes in less than three or four years. I will already have separate medical, so I'll be covered either way if I'm injured on the bike.

Does this make any financical sense, or is it just some crude justification to buy another expensive toy?? I won't buy anything until this spring anyway, as I've not given the 1125 a test ride yet (could end up with some other bike), but I'm trying to get my finances organized ahead of time.

First off, you're getting screwed on insurance. I pay $380/year on my 1125CR and $300/year on my Uly, full coverage on both. If you're military...get the hell away from USAA. At least for the bikes. They still have all my stuff - homeowners, fire, flood, auto - but I yanked the bikes years ago.

That said...please, let's NOT turn this into another insurance thread, there's enough going already....

Anyway. The aircooled and liquid cooled bikes are totally different animals. Depending on what your metric is you may feel more at home on one than you do on the other. Ride it first. A "bargain" isn't a bargain if you hate it.

As for maintenance...I've found that my maintenance costs aren't really *higher* per se. I can only ride a certain number of miles per year. But...the miles - and thus the maintenance dollars - are more spread out. The nice thing, as you note - if one is down, there's another right next to it that I can use. And variety is good : )

I can almost remember the days when I only owned 2 Buells..... : )

I just added an 1125R to the stable with an S3, but I wanted one since they came out and couldn't pass on the deal (even though I probably should have). I would say it's almost twice as expensive, I say almost because even though my insurance doubled... I won't need to replace maintenance parts (tires, oil changes, etc.) as often when I'm splitting my mileage between 2 bikes.

I own 4 Buells. Only thing that sucks is, the way I ride them, all 4 will be due for tires and service at the SAME time. Also, with 4 bikes, two of them 1125's, I am paying about $3500 a year for full coverage.

we're up to 7, hence the name nevrenuf and just hope that things stay to where we can keep them with out to much problems. so far so good although one of the bikes needs to be restored(83 fxrt)everything gets distributed out so outside of insurance it's not anymore than one over time. i ride 4 of the bikes to work and until this week i was working 4/10's (have to do 4/9's and a 4 now) which meant 1 bike a week at 50 miles roundtrip. figure out, even if i didn't do any more riding on the weekends, how long it would take before i did the next service or tires or even gas for that matter. i feel like the old lady who's a horder and just can't let anything go and obsessed with the bike. can't imagine life without one i guess. if i had a better paying job i would go get me an 1125cr next. kids aren't in school and doing ok on their own and if nothing else, they'll have a lot of toys to play with when it's my time.

get another one.

If you can pay cash, yes, own 2. If you are financing...don't.

The problem with owning more than one bike is that they tend to multiply when you're not looking. One day you have two, then the next four, and then before you know it the garage is full of bikes, parts, and projects.

I have a good friend over in Iraq and I sent him an e-mail telling him of the demise of Buell. He formerly had a XB12 and currently has the bad assest Streetglide I have ever seen.He called the dealer he bought the last two bikes from and he said he wanted a '09 1125R and XB12 in black. The dealer told him he only had a '08 1125R so my buddy called from Iraq and told me what was going on.I got on the phone and found at least 6 within a days ride and e-mailed the info to Iraq. Now he will have two brand new Buells waiting for him when he gets back in March that are paid for!I hope he will let me ride his XB: )I have never ridden one.

Nik is right, they just keep multiplying in the garage. One day I had a Harley and a Kawasaki, then suddenly there was a 1125R and a Uly. I keep opening the garaqe every once in awhile to see if maybe a 2010 1125 found its way in there. As long as you ride them and enjoy it, what the hell!

If you ride both bikes with any regularity, maintenance shouldn't change much as it will be more mileage driven than time.

I second that you are getting screwed on insurance, big time. Shop around.

Buying a second bike is in no way a sound financial decision. Buy a second one because you want something else to ride once in a while.

I have four bike in my garage. One will be leaving (not mine) and another is for sale. I find, for me, that two is plenty.

2 is a minimum for me.I am getting by with my Uly & my Honda XR650R in sumo trim.If the economy was better & charter fishing was like it was 10 years ago...............I would probably have 4.
The key is to make sure each bike is different enough to make it worthwhile.

I have multiple bikes...the only down side is the tag and smogging each year....get a good trickle charger to keep the batteries charged. Other than that, just have fun.
