May only be the rear bearings, but sometimes they go horribly wrong:

Belt loss would suck but the final drive failure is expensive and not really field serviceable (easy that is).

ALL bikes have wheel bearings; doesn't matter whether it has a belt, a chain, or a shaft.

Yeah Jaime, but Buells never have a problem with wheel bearings on their belt drives.....Are the good ones black or orange?

My point being that the drive method (shaft, belt, or chain) has nothing to do with a bearing that wasn't made to spec (which was the official word from BMW on those failing bearings).

As a tourer myself (and only an occasional track rider), I want the method that involves the least amount of downtime. The Buell belt is a wonderful idea, but I think I've read more threads in the Buell (and Harley) boards about broken belts than I have in the BMW boards about broken shafts.

Chains aren't even in the picture... too damned maintenance intensive. Basically, I want my motorcycles to work like my cars... I hop on, turn the key, and drive off. Couple of times a year I bring it into the dealership for routine maintenance. We're not there YET, but we're getting there.
