An old quote by Sir Isaac Newton comes to mind that sums up Knievel and Pastrana perfectly.
"If I have seen further than others it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
Different guys, different times, different technologies, one's a groundbreaker and the other has walked that path and is breaking new ground of his own. Just like the guys that came before Knievel were just as brave as him.
Pastrana still lives in the Annapolis, MD. area. When our local Buell group gets together we usually ride by his crib.
Btw, I saw him and Jolene at the Supercross race at Daytona last year. He was sitting up in the stands about a row to the left of me with everyone else. It took awhile before someone recognized him and then he got swamped with people wanting to take pictures, etc. He was a better sport about it than I would have been.
Mr. Backwards broke Evel's record for longest jump without a catching ramp. Only he was sitting backwards on the bike when he did it. I watched him run his bike around a flat track, sitting backwards with a blindfold on. He could put on a show.
If you check Bubba Blackwell's site. He broke all Evel's records on the same xr750. I got to see his come back jump in 2003 at Ukes HD during the HD 100th anniversary. He jumped 10 Peterbuilts for that jump.
Gregton, your statement is pure bull shitt. He wae riding a HD or big fourstroke on most of them, compared to Pisstrannas state of the art featherweight whatnot. oh yea ...you suk.......
I'm not saying it was easy, as I'm sure it wasn't....but jumping a car seems to me to be more engineering than physical talent. The way that car "flew" completely level it was clear that it had been properly weighted. All Travis had to do was mash the accelerator and keep it going straight.
Now, jumping and landing a motorcycle is a feat that I can't fathom.
Look at the bikes and tell me, would the stunt jumpers of today choose to jump the XR750 150 feet or would they choose the CR450R and jump it 300 feet...I bet each and everyone of them would pick the CR450R...Which one would you pick?
Evels XR750...Steel, Aluminum and fiberglass. Looks like about 6 inches of travel up front and maybe in the rear if he was lucky...and this was highly modified for Evel to jump!!! The front forks look like they came off a huffy BMX.
Wimps of today ride...Aluminum and plastic...I would guess over double the travel Evel had, does wonders for the landing.
I would never jump either bike those distances. But if I had to chose it would be the CR450R at 300 feet.
Even if you took all the bikes, equipment, distances etc. out of it. Evel said in interviews that there were jumps that he knew he probably wouldn't make. He did them anyway because he wouldn't go back on his word or let down the fans. How many people could do that? He had a pair so big, I'm surprised he could even sit on a bike. Whimp? Absolutely not.
"This one time at the Cow Palace, he knew his bike wasn't getting up enough speed to make the jump. But Evel would never back down. He jumped anyway. That one broke him up pretty good."
People have surpassed him. For the era he was king. But like Bubba for instance. He broke his record for distance on the same equipment. Then you can look at Patrana. The guy has done multiple flips in a single jump. Do you think he knew he would make it??? I doubt he knew the outcome. I think both are iconic for there times. I think in 10 years we'll be seeing even more crazy stunts that we would never have thought could be done.

Give that man a cigar
Any realistically competent driver could have done that jump. The most impressive talent on show from what little I could see on the clip was the handbrake turn. Sounds like he hit something though?

If you are talking about the double back flip Travis Pastrana pulled in competition, it was absolutely amazing. Not taking anything away from him, but I think he knew his chances were good after practicing into the foam pit and on dirt. I doubt he knew if he could stick it, but I think he knew he could make it around twice. Big difference in that and knowing ahead of time that your bike doesn't have the speed to make a jump and still going through with it because you gave your word. I'm a big fan of Pastrana. He does some amazing things and I've watched him ride locally since he was a kid. I think he has done much more amazing things on a motorcycle than he did in the rally car, but it was cool. I agree that in 10 years we will be seeing stuff that we never thought could be done. It has happened in the last 10.
No matter what anyone thinks about who has done what or who was better in their era, they all did/do great things and Evel was definitely not a whimp.
The biggest difference...computers. Much easier to to run the scenerios through A program to see if they will work before you try it. See what the launch point is and the speed ect. Evel had none of that. I can't believe I'm getting into this. I Bet Evel could kick the O.P.ers @$$ anyway..
