I want to go to the Cycle World IMS at the Javitts Center on Friday, Jan. 22. I'm also trying to squeeze every nickel 'till the buffalo sh*ts, so I'll be able to afford to go to Homecoming. I live 200 miles away, and don't really know the City at all, but there has to be a way to cut a few corners. Is there a way to go that won't cost me $50.00 for parking? I'll be coming down from Massachusetts in a car (unless the weather gets unexpectedly nice) with my wife, and, as much as I love going to the show, it'll be really hard to justify spending nearly $200.00 between gas, tolls, tickets, food and parking. I mean, Buell's gone, and there won't be any Guzzis there, but the show is a nice break from the bleakness of winter, and I love being surrounded by all things motorcycle. If I can find a way to cut the cost, it would be worth it. Are there any New Yorkers who can offer suggestions on how to do it?

You can take mass transit... and depending on the weather there is FREE MOTORCYCLE PARKING at the convention center as well (which is what I always do, conditions permitting).

Personally, I'd never drive into the city if I didn't have to.

If you can, I'd rather take a train in. If you grab Amtrack at some place a little up river, the rate is probably pretty cheap, and you'll get dropped off 3 1/2 blocks from the Javit's center.

If you take Metro North it's a little longer of a walk, but probably cheaper fares, walkable for me, others may opt for a subway or cab ride though.

If you take a junky car, you can find a place on the street on the west side to park. Thats what I do if I have to go into the city. Just read the parking signs carefully so you don't get towed, and don't leave any valuables in the car. In sight or out.
Another alternative is to park at a Metro North train station somewhere in southwest Connecticut and take the train in. They usually have a shuttle bus that runs between Grand Central Terminal and the Javitts Center. But that will cost a few bucks if you aren't traveling alone.
If I had a more passenger-friendly vehicle I would say jump in with me, but I have a pickup truck and I don't think anyone wants to ride out back.
Let me know what day you're planning to go. Maybe we can meet up.

I can almost smell the BBQ now.

Coming from Jersey, look into either NJ Transit buses, or taking the PATH train under the Hudson. Either option will take you from NJ to the west side, near enough to Javits to walk.
There are some early bird parking specials on the west side, around 10th and 11th avenues, in the upper 30's to mid-40 streets, but some of the parking lots or garages over nearer the Javits and near Mad Sq Garden will charge higher, "event" rates. When I used to have to have my car for work over at 43rd and 8th, I used to do the early bird parking (usually in by 10am, out by a certain hour...) for $15 or so.

Drive to whatever is a convenient place on the Metro North . . . park, pay a few buck to park if you have to . . . and take the train.

It comes into Grand Central Station, walk to Java's and enjoy yourself. Can't get much simpler than that.

The tickets will likely (you can buy them on line) set you back about same as parking but it'll be a lot less hassle and no tolls to boot.

ALTERNATIVE: If you DO want to drive . . . park up by Columbia (a mere blocks from the Dinosaur) in the 6 hour meters or the much cheaper garages . . . and hope on the train ($2.50) or take a taxi to javitt's.

I drive all over Manhattan daily . . . why subject yourself to it if you don't have to.

Cheapest+easiest way is the Chinatown bus.
It departs regularly from Boston's south station and goes to new York's Chinatown.
It costs $15!

I took it on the way home last year and was impressed.
Four hours with one break in the middle.
Bring beer and a sandwich.

Getting to the javitts center from New York's Chinatown is a taxi ride.

Also, Penn station is walking distance so you could try the subway.

Well, after discussion with the wife, we've decided that we will go to the show, even though there won't be many bikes there that we're interested in. As far as parking goes, I guess we'll bite the bullet and park in the lot across the street from the Javitts center. We go into New York once a year for the show, and we're not that familiar with the ins and outs of when and where to park, which subway to take to where, etc. For us, it's just easier to shell out the bucks and keep it as smooth as possible.
Of course, if there's a January Thaw when the show is happening, we'll ride down and park for free at the Javitts; but we can't count on that happening.
Thank you all for all the helpful suggestions. We do appreciate them.
