I went to Cycle Gear today to pick up a new helmet. My Nolan is an eyesore, and I think the bacteria trapped in the fabric is starting to evolve. I wanted to get a lid on a budget, but wouldn't you know it- My fat head did not fit into any helmet of beginner price. KBC's were on clearance for 79- No way. Seven O Seven and HJC- Even worse. Scorpion- Not so bad, but with a 2x it was loose up and down, yet tight on my temples. So I was left with only 2 helmets that fit well: Arai and Shoei. The Arai didn't look very great, and Shoei wasn't all that great either. Their color selection available was either solid or too fancy, nothing in between. But, I went ahead and got the gloss black XL sized RF-1000. For 300 bucks it was a great price compared to MSRP. The point of the story is: Why can't Stewie type heads be protected cheap? Other point is there are CHEEEAP gear deals going pretty much everywhere guys.... Go get a new lid while the goings cheap.

I can understand if the Arai or SHOEI helmets didn't fit your budget. They are both superb lids. We can argue all day about which brand is best in the protection department, but those brands are welcome to protect my nugget anyday. Sorry to hear about your oddly shaped nugget issues. |

Malott442- helmet shape isn't necessarily directly related to price; different brands of helmets tend to be shaped differently. Shoei's and Aria's are generally shaped differently from one another so it depends on which models you tried if you found that both fit your noggin. Check out this article for information on different shaped helmets and brands: http://www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/mot orcycle-helmet-shapes.htm I have a "long oval" head. Up until recently, the only helmet that would have really fit me would have been a ~$500 Arai Profile. Luckily I found out that a Shark RSI is a similar shaped helmet and then found one on sale for ~$200. |

I had the same problem with scorpion lids, I can honestly say that the foam in that area breaks down fast and is no longer an issue. |

I tried an Arai corsair V on the other day and that thing rocks. I found a Hayes replica for $430 but that is still pretty stiff for me. So I am looking into the HJC FS-15. I like my AC12 carbon plus you can get a Spies Trophy replica for $180 or an Elbowz II for $130. |

You will be happy with the Shoei... you may have spent a little more than you were planning, but you will get your money's worth in the long run. The construction and fit quality for the Shoei and Arai helmets, although more money, will still be comfortable and fit well a year from now, where as some of the cheaper helmets start to feel... well, cheap after a while. That being said... HJC helmets have to be the best bang for your buck, and they have a wider price/product range than most other manufacturers. Also, they are one of the most widely sold brands, so finding a replacement shield shouldn't be a problem just about anywhere. Now, as to your problem with finding a helmet to fit your noggin.... the helmets you are seeing for bargain bin prices, are just that, bargain bin. Not to say they are necceseraly cheap helmets, most likely just left over models from last year when the store ordered them in a wide variety of sizes, and there are probably only a few left in your size. Put the leftover of last years model on sale to make room for the new helmets. Try a few more store's and see what they have on hand.. you might get lucky... then again you might just have a funny shaped head |

I've found the opposite, the cheaper the helmet, the bigger the head it fits. Always figured cheap stuff for the American market is made for oversized Americans!?!? Almost like other countries think we have heads like Charlie Brown. |

Funny shaped head? I hope not, but it probably is. My temples are the culprit, I feel like Brain from Animaniacs. (Message edited by malott442 on December 27, 2009) |
