Guys,
The Revolution isn't the VR1000 "re-worked".
Harley tried, and actually used it in a mock up/prototype, but it was too unreliable and way too expensive to use in a street bike. Each VR1000 race motor was around 30,000.00. The Bike S&S is selling is 52,000.00.
The VR1000 motor was used as a starting point, but isn't the motor in the V Rod.
While I don't think the VR1000 is the best looking bike out there. Its a race bike made by a company who isn't known for road racing. It served a purpose, even if it only won 1 race. 15 years in the race world is huge as far as change goes. Place this and the 1125RR next to each other. We've come alonggggg way baby. |

Had they kept that alive maybe Buell would have more of a foundation to make the Rooster as the next step and not a first step. |

I guess we could draw the same comparison between the Thunderstorm Motor and the Sportster Motor as we are between the VR1000 Motor and the Revolution Motor. |

The 72* and 60* share a few components, but the architecture is completely different.
The 60* VR1000 and the Revolution share the same basic architecture as do the Thunderstorm and the Sporty motor. |

I see the XBRR as a refinement of the 03-07 Thunderstorm and the 08+ motor as the street application of those refinements. |

I saw a photo of the 1100 SOHC engine years ago in a Harley coffee table book but never found any more info for it. Prior to Buell, I thought that made a lot of sense as the next step in the evolution of the Sportster, before it became a mini-cruiser.
It would be interesting to know the technical details of that engine. I'm sure it'd be woefully technically out of date now, but it would have been really neat to see where that engine could have gone. Imagine an updated version of that engine in an XB frame. |

For fun I went to the Harley Museum the day after Buell's closure was announced on a preplanned trip with my buddy. We didn't do the full tour but we did see that white/orange M through the glass in the restoration shop. Very very nice bike. Great pics but they do not do that bike justice. |

This raises an interesting question.
How much of an engine design can change before a new engine is created?
How different are Aprilia's in house 60* v-twins vs. Rotax's 60* v-twins?
If the case is different, but the internals are the same, is it the same motor?
If the transmission is different, but the rest of the engine is the same, is it the same motor?
Which XB motor is the "real" XB motor? The 03-07? The XBRR? The 08+? Are these the "same" engine or are we really looking at three distinct motors?
Do the Thunderstorm heads not work on the Tuber motors? |
