I hate Mo-Rons...Not the mentally challenged genuine handicapped kind..most of them I have met try really hard to do good. The "other" kind of Mo-Ron...you know..you see them everywhere on the ride to work...the ones that are trying to kill themselves and whoever gets close...the ones that text and read while driving..the ones that cross lanes arguing on the cell phone kind....this morning I encountered a real Mo-Ron...this guy is a charter member of the Mo-Ron club...how he is still alive at his age (looked to be in his 40's) I will never know. Coming to work this morning...we have the perfect conditions for sea fog...not whispy fog...or layer fog...but fog so thick you can only see maybe 75 feet... Just before sun-up...I was merging into traffic to find that someone laid into his horn...The sound is coming from behind me..I look into the mirrors and dont see anybody...I look again and catch a glint from behind...It is a Mo-Ron in a cage... The cage is a little grey car (same color as the fog in the low light)...WITH NO LIGHTS ON!!! The traffic is backed up a bit, running at about 45 mph...this guy starts jumping back and forth lane to lane like a caged beast trying to get around the traffic...in the next 8 miles, he came around me (I backed off) and managed to run 2 people off the road. (he was haulinass AND invisible)... I was some seriously kind of angry, but kept my cool...I laid back and followed Mr. Mo-Ron to where he was going...I waited 1/2 block away while he got out of the car and went in a building (workplace?)...I drove up, got the license number, description and called the FHP and reported him....While I was on the phone, I learned that the two people he ran off the road had called in, but did not get the tag number... Mr. Mo-Ron will get his lesson...FHP takes this kind of stuff very serious...hope they bust him big time...he will get at least questioned over it..I will be happy to testify. It's all too common I'm afraid, here too, except the Gendarmes or CRS won't do anything about it unless they catch them in the act. Darwin generally rules with these people but sadly they do sometimes take others with them. Let's be careful out there people. |

Harry- Great story. Glad you did your "good deed" for the day. I'm always amazed at the same thing here. People driving at twilight and/or in rainy/foggy conditions in silver/gray cars with NO lights on. Some people just don't get that about 75% of the purpose of vehicle lighting is so that other people can see YOU. |

The farther south you get the more you see the "driving dead". |

It was on Hwy 17/92 between Haines City and Auburndale...the Mo-Ron was driving with out of state plates... And it was bad foggy along that road this morning...northern Polk county especially near I-4 gets really bad...we have a lot of chain reaction pile ups in foggy weather....last year there was something like a 45 car pile up in the fog... |

This thread reminds me of what I'd like to get/give for Christmas: A train horn for my GF's car and one for my truck. I had a customer who is an OTR truck driver- one day he shows up with his new rig, nicely outfitted overall- then I noticed a second set of horns pointing to the right side, under the cab. I said "Whuzzat?", he said, "Train Horn. Didn't realize how much fun it would be when I bought the truck...". I told him to give it a tug when he was leaving the dealership- see, there are about a half-dozen rocking chairs outside for customers, occupied daily by the retired/bored/nothing better to do 'cept drink free coffee club- he hit that horn, first time I ever saw a geezer group levitation, LOL!!! Actually, a train horn would be difficult and too much $$$ to install- anyone familiar with the horns they use on fire trucks and ambulances? I wonder what it'd take to put one of those under the hood... Mo-Ron antidote, a HEAVY DUTY HORN! |

I also got to see a 'Mo-Ron' this morning in heavy fog. Saw the guy up ahead in the oncoming lanes trying to turn left across traffic to get to McDonalds. There was a very small break in traffic behind me and the driver tried to quickly cut across traffic to get to the parking lot. Must have been watching oncoming traffic too closely because he completely missed the entrance and wound up nose down in the ditch and high centered. He was fine, but definitely hurt his pride. I got a laugh out of it afterwards. -Patrick |

We get that here all too often. One night, about 8 years ago, my son was in Children's hospital for a week with RSV. I was driving home from the hospital in Milwaukee to Waukesha on I94 in my 4wd dodge Ram, with a fresh 6" of snow on the ground, I was doing about 40-45MPH. I had a guy in a Pontiac Grand Am rapidly creeping up on my ass. It was nearly midnight, and pretty much NO traffic. This guy in the grand am decide to follow in my track, but keeping less than a foot off my bumper for about a mile, until he decided he could go MUCH faster, and went to pass me(I was in the center lane) on the left. No less than 10 car lengths in front of me I saw the fastest I've EVER seen a car go in to a multiple 360 spins. It didn't end up well, with the car smashing in to a center median wall. I had let off the gas, and slowed down when the car went in to it's wild spin so I could see the carnage better, and was pretty much stopped when he hit the wall. So I slowly went past him, rolled down my window to see if he was all right. I then stated, "maybe next time you wont drive like such a dick". His reply was something about traction control. I then began to tell him that traction control doesn't fix stupidity, and then wished my good luck to him with the ticket he'll be receiving shortly from the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the towing bill, and drove away. |

With all the dumb s**t that DOT and the EPA have made us do to cars in this country, I'm amazed they haven't done something USEFUL and make every automaker include a relay. Once the wipers are on...it fires the relay and TURNS ON THE LIGHTS. Of course, I'm still amazed when I meet people who HONESTLY believe they're saving electricity by not using their headlights. I don't know why it surprises me anymore... |

Ratbuell, just about every GM car made in the last 15 years will automatically turn on the lights at night or when the wipers are on. Hell even the base model Cavaliers do it. |

Fast - I'm glad you did that. Road courtesy, or lack thereof, is a real pet peeve of mine. We have no shortage of a$$hat drivers like that here in CA. |

Traffic lights can be fun with Mo-rons here. Many lights here open from one to two lanes to let traffic turn etc then merges back into one after. Now & again I'll get a mo-ron dipping in & out behind me etc & we get caught together at a light. Now we don't have one suspended in the middle like in the US they're on posts & we use cab-over tractors here too, I'll edge right up as far as I can so's he can't see the light, then before it's gone green, I'll drop it into gear & bounce it on the clutch. Watch that sucker shoot the red & panic, funny as hell. I hasten to add I never do it when there's a bike coming. |

I had a similar thing happen to me a couple of years ago. Some mo-ron is coming off the expressway and needs to turn at the first street to his right. Unfortunately, that means cutting across three lanes of feeder traffic. I was in the far right lane, preparing to turn on said road. I had a pickup truck on my immediate left which partly blocked his view of me coming off the exit, but it that was no excuse for what he did, which was cut directly across all three lanes and forcing both the pick-up and myself (on my BMW RT) to slam on the brakes to avoid running into him. He came within inches of me, and I was pissed. Unlike Fast1075, I followed him to his work and got off my bike took off my helmet and chewed his ass for a good 10 minutes. Later when I was at work myself, I realized that it wasn't the smartest thing in the world confronting him, especially here in Texas where we have a concealed gun law. That intersection is sometimes patrolled by the city police because of just such things, they don't want the off-coming traffic turning on that street and regularly cite folks who do it. However, it's still a common thing due to where the ramp is and the previous exit, which forces people through two lights before they can get to that road. Wayne |

Froggy - I thought that was only if the DRLs were enabled. Which, at least on Chrysler products, can be DISabled by any dealer with StarScan (the Mopar version of Digital Tech). Now, my mom's Chrysler 300C has an "auto-light" feature. Turn the headlight switch to A (as opposed to off, park, or on) and a light sensor on the dash runs the show - full lighting front and rear, with gauges. My guess is lots (check that - MOST) of folks here in Maryland/PA get a wiper/light/DRL function disabled, considering the number of Tahoes, Monte Carlos, and scores of other GM cars and trucks running dark in the rain. And if it is DRL based...there's still no taillights, DRLs are usually high beams running at 50% and that's it. Or fog lights. No perimeter lighting at all. Either that or they use the old trick (if it still applies) of engaging the parking brake one click, which disables the DRL system because it sees the vehicle as "parked". I have 2 sets of airhorns that had been on San Francisco firetrucks until the mounting plates broke. I haven't entirely given up the idea of mounting a set on my M2 but they're a bit large and weigh a few pounds, not to mention the problem of running enough air pressure to actually get them to sound right. I currently run a pair of air horns purchased at the local auto supply store. I used padded hose clamps to hold the compressor which uses the original horn wiring, and more hose clamps to mount the dual horns to the frame member on the left side of the bike below the original horn's location. They interfere a bit when I need to change the oil filter, but they're worth it. |

Rat, the DLR's can be disabled by pulling a fuse, I don't know how it affects the rest of the automatic lights, including auto normal lights at night. The auto lights are quite nifty, I can't recall the last time I had to override them on my 02 Monte. The parking brake trick works on it too, but it makes an annoying chime if the car isn't in park. |

I usually stop early at red lights so I can lurch ahead if I see somebody in the mirror about to ass end me.......safety cushion. The driver next to me is texting at the red light and I roll ahead. Works neart every time when people aren't paying attention to "DRIVING"! My favorite is the rare occurrence when I'm at a down hill light, next to somebody I know....... and there is nobody behind me. I gently back up a few feet whilst my acquaintance pushes his brake pedal thru the floor board............/ |
