Deja vu all over again. I hitched a ride from a Navy base to town back in the Vietnam era with a marine sergeant with three tours in country, told me about the last tour and how they needed permission to return fire when they were attacked. That was enough for him, he said. Would rather get out than stay in if that's how the war would be fought.

This is my ongoing objection to the course of events in the Afghan conflict. When a patrol cannot defend itself in a combat zone, it's time to bring our boys home. When our military people are not allowed to stop insurgents, it's time to come home. Apologies to Gen. McChrystal, I know it's not easy being in charge.

I'll even give Prez. B. Hussein O. a peace prize.

You can still defend yourself. Always will be able to defend yourself. You should always be aware of what lays behind or around your target so you can take the possible harm of innocent people and weigh if the risk is worth it or not. If you're being fired upon that is different in a way than seeing a bomb being planted. I hear all the time the same thing "Our boys have their hands tied" and while some of the rules have become too strict it is not the case that they cannot defend themselves. Another thing to take into consideration that the media distorts the truth constantly. Talk to someone who is there, or has recently been there and you may find this out to be the case.

Too late he already has one. ( and deserved, IMHO, but that's another thread )

It's maddening. But. Since we are the only guys who care, at all, about killing civilians, ROE's are always going to be an issue. I'm quite a bit more aggressive in that decision making process, by nature, but I'm not the one making the rules for others. Needless to say, I'm on our troops side.

My real objection is the General's comment that " In fact, what we find is civilian casualties who are unarmed civilians." Bull. The enemy wears no uniform or distinguishing markings, by design. If his buddies pick up his rifle, the corpse is unarmed.

I'm absolutely convinced that most of the "civilians" our troops are accused of killing were dead terrorists. Take away the weapons, how can you tell?

The media is very biased, and all video from the mid-east is run through a Saudi owned company in London. Their stated purpose is to make Islam ( and the Saudi's) look good. Don't believe a thing you see out of context, unless it was shot by a journalist you know to be trustworthy.

You can say all you want about ROE if you are sitting there listening to the radio or watching the tube. In Somalia you COULD NOT return fire until you got permission from the freakin' UN. You can say all you want but until you get on the ground and actually live under the rules you don't know.

It is maddening and you begin to feel that your government doesn't give a crap about you. Yet another nail in our country's coffin.......we can't continue to wage war the way we do when everyone else fights to win- no matter what. It freakin' WAR for crying out loud.....

"It is maddening and you begin to feel that your government doesn't give a crap about you."

A more true statement will not be made in reference to ROE. They abandoned us...those responsible will rot in Hell for their actions.

Nuke it on our way out.

really, its been over 50 years. The Fire Control crews need some trigger time in this war. Just save some for Mecca and Medina.

Yep, I said it, yep, I meant it.

City....don't forget Qom & Tehran.

It's not really a good solution. But it's one I worry about, since politicians that try appeasement get pushed into corners & go to war, badly.

Cataract2, that movie had great lines & one of the scariest lines ever in a motion picture.
Little girl, after being told the Marines were there. "It won't make any difference"

When are you guys going to realize that as far as Obama and his pals are concerned, you are the enemy.

Starting to see why his ROE might make sense to him?
