The guy AND the gal in that photo should be bitch slapped for not wearing the proper gear. Be mindful that you and I are paying part of our insurance to cover the overt acts of absolute idiots.

Gads . . do I sound opinionated?

This is not directed at Court but would someone please explain to me in simple terms how insurance companies can get away with charging more for uninsured folks going to the hospital? Hospitals that actually take uninsured folks pay for it themselves, at least our local ones here.

Ever wonder why sportbike insurance costs more than cruiser? Why literbike costs more than, say, a 500cc? Because there are so many more wrecks from people acting like idiots. Hence YOU are paying for it because you ride -X- kind of motorcycle.

I don't think he said anything about the idiots being uninsured. Just the fact that they're idiots gets the average price raised on the type of bike.

how insurance companies can get away with charging more for uninsured folks going to the hospital? Hospitals that actually take uninsured folks pay for it themselves, at least our local ones here.

It has to do with how taxes work.

When an uninsured person receives service, the hospital can't deny that service by law. The hospital knows that it will be writing off the vast majority of the cost of service. Therefore, the hospital negotiates with the patient to have some portion of the costs paid. The remainder is written off as a loss. The higher the costs the more that can be written off. The higher the write-off, the larger the tax savings.

The hospital covers costs and provides profit in three ways, with regard to uninsured patients, direct payment for services, tax reductions for unpaid fee write-offs, and higher negotiated costs paid via insurance claims payment.

Additionally, hospitals receive grants and subsidies to provide for a portion of their uninsured, unpaid services by local, state, and federal governments. There is a direct correlation between the amount and magnitude of unpaid, uninsured benefits provided and the amount of grant money available.

I will eat exactly as many chocolate cookies you choose to make.

Insurance companies, in part, pay a direct cost for uninsured patients. This is reflected in higher negotiated charges by the hospital, higher nominal insurance expenses, lower profits, and eventually higher premiums.
