Great set of quotes Ratyson. Did you pull those from a website? If so, can you provide a link? Thanks. |

BTW I do believe that people should be able to own guns. I also strongly believe that that right should be regulated to some extent. To many people have guns that shouldn't. A gun is a great tool that needs to be given great respect otherwise it should be taken away. |

Adrian, I keep a list of these quotes handy, very small print on an index card in my wallet. I did, however, copy/paste them from here since it was easier than re-typing them all: http://www.trettel.com/ccrc/issues/gun/gun-control .html I did a search on the text of one of the quotes I had, and this popped up. |

Drkside, There are more than enough laws on the books to keep people from having guns that should not legally have them. Other than that, there is no "regulating" needed. |

"Colonial rebellions throughout the modern world have been acts of shared political imagination. Unless unhappy people develop the capacity to trust other unhappy people, protest remains a local affair easily silenced by traditional authority. Usually, however, a moment arrives when large numbers of men and women realize for the first time that they enjoy the support of strangers, ordinary people much like themselves who happen to live in distant places and whom under normal circumstances they would never meet. It is an intoxicating discovery. A common language of resistance suddenly opens to those who are most vulnerable to painful retribution the possibility of creating a new community. As the conviction of solidarity grows, parochial issues and aspirations merge imperceptibly with a compelling national agenda which only a short time before may have been the dream of only a few. For many Americans colonists this moment occurred late in the spring of 1774." -- T.H. Breen, The Marketplace of Revolution: How Consumer Politics Shaped American Independence, Oxford University Press, 2004, p.1. |

Great set of quotes Ratyson. Thank you for providing them. They go a long way to clarifying the issues for me. Not only of gun ownership but also the communal responsibility to maintain a trainedmilitia. |

Gaesati, Sorry, I missed responding to some of your comments in our discussion. "Working out what the authors of the constitution intended seems to have occupied a great deal of the time of the judiciary over the past 100 years and a Democrat's interpretation is often different to a Republican's. My view is that the intentions are clear, but for some do not jibe with their own personal political agendas and so they expend a LOT of effort trying to twist and cloud the various issues. The 2nd amendment is a perfect example. it seems to me that all government involves the surrender of individual freedoms of someone. It becomes a question of how much freedom any person is prepared to sacrifice. I agree; unless monetary contribution to the government are voluntary, then I absolutely agree. Voluntary taxation is an interesting concept. I wonder how many of the big government proponents crying for higher taxes would voluntarily contribute at the same rate that they are forcing others to pay? Probably about the same as the percentage of congressmen who would voluntarily enroll in a government controlled health insurance plan, a very small percentage. Does that make them hypocrites? "Certainly, I agree with you that government is too far removed from the constituents." How do we change that? The only viable solution that I see is term limits. "A minor point; wrt the statue of liberty I was not referring to it as a legal matter but as a sentiment." I understand, which is what prompted my comment that your view on the immigration issues seems more "emotionally" based than legally based. "In any case I am sorry that you seem to have become heated enough to resort to capitals. It is only a discussion about the degree to which the powers of government should be limited." I'm very passionate about the issue, it's nothing that you yourself instigated. I would be pleased to learn your answers to some of the questions I previously posed. |

Thanks for your much too kind words Richard (Gohot). My usual preference is to just grunt, scowl and point. I promise that there are much better communicators here than I. Sometimes I get lucky and avoid having to literally draw a picture. |

If anyone else hears you compliment Obama they could kick you out of Texas. Nah, it's a pretty independent minded state. It's ok to support someone if they do/say things that you agree with. Kinda blows that whole "republicans can't think for themselves" meme out of the water though, doesn't it? In that vein, I'm glad to hear the administration backing off of the withdrawal portion. I hope Gates, Petraeus & especially McChrystal can pull this off. If they do, good on POTUS for doing the right thing. |

Awesome! Where are the rest of the conservative candidates? They should be watching this speech before they open their mouths again. Real passion for this country and our Constitution was lost in the last election. I voted for John McCain but he lacked passion, courage and determination. |
