Curious as to how people are doing. I found out I'm getting laid off for the Month of January. The reasoning is a bit messed up. I make commission if I earn above a certain sales number. When that number isn't met I get a fairly lowly hourly wage (not quite enough to make it). They are hypothesizing that I won't make commission so they don't want to have to pay me hourly. My 'manager' gets paid on gross profit, so he gets to stay. The difference between the hourly wage and unemployment isn't much, so I question the reasoning. I've created some waves this week and my wife thinks they won't be wanting me back  She wants me to be vocal on some issues I've been taking care of on my own. Being vocal got me canned from the last job. Happy Holidays, aye?  | ||

I'm OK. Got some stuff for sale to make Christmas money but I'm in a fairly stable job right now and thank God not on commission any more. I visit repair shops today and chills go down my spine. The decision to take a pay cut for this gig might bite me in the next month or two, but I'm preparing for it and I'll cross that bridge then. Oh, and don't be vocal. Getting laid off in January could turn into fired period. I had a pretty vocal streak for a long time but not in this economy. (Message edited by sknight on December 03, 2009) | ||

i'm still around after a few layoffs and just biding my time in the hope that things pick up after the first of the year so i'm still working 40 and the wife finally went back to work on monday after 6 months of no work so not doing as good as we have in the past but a lot better than others. so at this point rick, try and bite the tongue and play their game. hang in there. | ||

All 3 jobs have had pay cuts and layoffs loom at the one that pays the major bills. Wolves are at the door, but I'm not dead yet. If I can hold onto the job, I'll have a lot of stuff paid off next year as part of the "five-year plan" that didn't include a recession/depression. | ||

I work in a manufacturing plant for a union, sales are down, and they are curtailing 1/3 of our plant. I'm on the lay-off list. December 21st will be my last day at work. I've already hit the streets in anticipation of this, but the unemployment rate in Phoenix is higher than Detroit. Perhaps this just means more ride time... | ||

Best of luck to you Bartimus. I survived our "re-staffing" last year...then got a pay cut a couple months later. I did have a word with the bosses...just enough to get the info I was looking for. We're 16 months into the construction slowdown here with no end in sight. Some competitors are bidding work at cost just to keep guys working. That never works out. I remember some advice I heard years ago "Not many businesses close their doors due to lack of work. It's mostly because the work they have was bid too cheap". We're hunkered down and hoping for the best. Not long ago $40K contracts were "nuisance" jobs. Now they're cause for celebration. | ||

So far so good on this end. I'm in the carpet industry, so we've taken one helluva hit along with home construction. Luckily, I'm in a department that has always run as a skeleton crew, and we're at the head of the design process, so they would be hard pressed to knock one of us out and get anything done. I definitely count my blessings for that. I'm also super easy to get along with, never balk at dumb requests (it all pays the same), and have experience at almost every odd job that comes our way. I think that helps. (Now that I've said it, watch that bite me in the ass!) It IS a bit scary right now though simply because we've dropped to one income. My wife just quit her job to stay home with our 4 month old. It's gonna' be tight. If something happens to my job, we're screwed. Good luck to you guys... Hang in there! ~SM | ||

Poor, but I'm surviving. My income is about 1/4 of what it was a year ago. Thankfully I have managed my money fairly well and I don't owe anybody a dime other than my mortgage. Also helps that I have a 4 bedroom house with a couple of renters  We'll make it, but barely... As far as Christmas goes, well my whole family is basically all self-employed (My dad and I run a company, my mom contracts medical transcription work, my brother and his wife own a couple of restaurants, my girlfriend nannies...), and we decided that we don't really need anything this year and to not exchange gifts. It will be a very different thing for my family of givers! But I think it will be good as well. Sometimes having a little less can teach you some important lessons. I believe that I will come out of this economic mess with no debt, a little more in savings than before, some important saving and spending lessons learned...all of which will set me up to be able to actually have a retirement plan in place. |
