I was involved in a pretty good crash today on my way home from work.... I'm fine but my truck is hosed.

What happened....
I was headed south in the hammer lane of I-71 getting ready to go over top of I-270 when a driver merging from the 270 on ramp lost control and did a couple of donuts in front of me.... it wasn't good. I hit him on the right rear corner of his Jeep. He had spun to about a 45 deg. angle from the front of my truck when I made contact.
I called 911, then my wife then the police showed up.... told them what happened and they told me it would be better if I called my own tow truck company because their tow truck would take my truck straight to the impound lot.....

SOOOO... I called my insurance agent for help.... Don't ya think he would have some numbers at his finger tips to help you out or am I just crazy?? I'm sitting in the middle of I-71 in the rain.... how about offering to make a few calls for me?!? DO SOMETHING! After what seemed like forever I got a number from him for a body shop near my place of work... I called them and they arranged for a tow and rental car. Is it just me??? Shouldn't your insurance agent be able to help you out when the shit hits the fan??

My whole point to this rant is to let my fellow Badweb members know they need to have some bases covered if this happens to them....

Have some telephone numbers at the ready...
I hate to think what this would have been like if it happened to my wife.

Wolf,

Sounds like you have a agent that isn't working for you. Taking your money yes. Good thing it did happen to you and not your wife. I'd feel the same. I'd also be looking into another insurance company or agent when the air clears and this is all settled.

Not only that but put the ICE entry on your cell phone!!!

ICE = In Case of Emergency - those numbers WILL be called by EMS if you are not conscious.

ALSO - you better have your doctor's contact info posted by the phone where your emergency contact can reach them. I've had to use this a few times racing and can't imagine NOT having everything in place BEFORE something happens.

REALLY Really good post!

This obviously only works if you are conscious (and have an iPhone/smartphone), There are a number iPhone apps that you can search for local companies in about any category, towing, food, hospital etc. based on you current location.

Wolf glad your okay. Your right, the insurance companies are a rip off. I pay something like $168.00 a month for insurance on my truck. I have a clean driving record. The insurance company should be the ones making all the phone calls.

What Toona said. My Blackberry can do just about anything info-wise and include maps and GPS, etc. I'm hooked on my Crackberry...

What Toona and Odie said! Glad you were in a truck and not on a bike. Best of luck with the insurance company.

As for the Crackberry...I totally get that term now!

With regards to why the police don't call a tow truck, locally a few years back, the police dept came under fire for always calling a certain towing company and the other tow truck operators were getting skipped over, even if they were on the scene first. turns out there were some "kickbacks" involved. The city then passed an ordinance requiring the police dept to keep a running order of which towing company was next in the rotation. That company then had "x" amount of time to get to the scene before they got bumped.

Hey Mark! That SUCKS! I'm glad you are OK. The 'ole Dodge.....well they made a lot of those.

Make every effort to make the other guy's insurance pay for your needs directly. If you don't have to involve your insurance to pay and subrigate for their funds from the other guy's company, it usually won't go on your record as them having paid a claim. They tell you otherwise, but it makes a difference, I have seen it happen to many of my customers over the years.

Don't quit your current company for their being a slacker until you have researched and priced others and given this time to settle. When they pick this wreck up, even though it is not your fault, your old company and a new company, can raise your rates after the fact, even if you disclose this current claim. It is less likely with the old company. You can file a complaint with their mother-ship about your broker if you feel the need.

Some city contracted towing companies have to haul only to the city impound lot to not show prejudice to body shops also. The insurance company will pay a second tow to the shop of your choice for that and a couple other reasons.

I hate that merge. It's always pucker from start to finish... the last time through I was pulling a trailer. Ugh.

Great post. I need to put that together, and figure out something for ICE. I use a company supplied cell phone, which by policy is required to be password locked. I can just put an ICE sticker on it though.

Or can I put an ICE card in the front of my wallet? Will they look there?

My State Farm insurance has optional tow coverage. I can call the agent's number anytime (it's right on my insurance ID card) and they'll contact a tow company for me.

I need a new agent.... I have been with State Farm for over 27 years. I have been with this agent for the last 17.

Needless to say, I'm still pissed.

It's not so much the company as the agent. I have Allstate and so does my friend. He says his won't do shyt for him. I called mine the other day to look up the blue book to my sons car. She did, my friend is switching agents. I would call my agent to remind him that you could save more by going through A broker and if he isn't going to do more than A broker then you will be moving.
But most important is that you're OK.
