Has anyone else seen this movie which opened last Friday? The release date was pushed back a year because the movie studios didn't think the public would want to see a film this grim while the economy was crumbling. An unknown cataclysm has occurred ten years before we meet The Man and The Son. They are pushing a rickety shopping cart through the ashes of the Eastern seaboard attempting to get to the ocean where they somehow believe they will find blue skies and salvation. Nothing is left. Earthquakes occur. Rotting forests of dead trees come crashing down on anyone trapped there. Permanent grey skies hover over burnt out cities. There is no food and bands of rednecks have grouped together and have resorted to cannibalism. A few scenes are pretty sketchy but it ultimately becomes a story of the slightest spark of humanity surviving. This is definitely NOT the happy face apocalypse of "2012". Viggo Mortenson is incredible in it. You know, Strider/Aragorn from LOTR and the Russian hitman in Eastern Promises? Robert Duvall has a small role but you have to look hard to realize that Tom Hagan is underneith the grime. Check it out. I am picking up Cormac McCarthy's book, "The Road" right now. |

It's a bleak read, 'dog. Makes "No Country For Old Men" seem almost cheerful. I recommend you save it until springtime when the grass is green and the birds are singing... rt |

I finished reading the novel and also listened to the audio CDs. It is disturbing while thought provoking. The sliver of humanity is the love of the father and the son. Not exactly Merry Christmas reading but worthwhile nonetheless. |
