I just upgraded from an XSi (18 months and 25,000 pictures) to the new 7D.

The 7D takes better pics - if you know a lot about the camera, photography in general and look really really close at the images.

slickdeals.net has a thread about Target clearing out the XSi kit for <$400.

Pick up the Tamron 28-75 ($385@Amazon) for a killer, sharp lens that rivals the $1300 Canon equivalent.

Oh, and the kit lens with the XSi is a great lens for the $$.
