I just purchased a 09 XB12Ss and my current insurance agency, Nationwide, wants to charge me over $1000 dollars a year. My previous bike, an 05 XB9SX, was about $600. Mind you, I have been riding for over 2 years now, took the safety class, and I am also accident free, and over the age of 25.

Who should I look to go with to get a reasonable rate that also offers good coverage? Should I go with one of the large, mainstream insurance agencies? Or should I go with one of the smaller companies that only offer motorcycle insurance? If so, who do you suggest? Any help or advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian

Geico and Dairyland both gave me decent quotes, under 800 bucks. Rider beat them by 300+.
Check with as many places as possible.
I was insured with Progressive for the past 10 years, no accidents, no tickets, and they wanted 2900 bucks a year for the 1125. I asked why and the woman on the Customer Service line told me it was a "High Performance Motorcycle". I explained to her that I already had two "High Performance Motorcycles" insured with her company for less than 600 dollars a year, and at the rate she was charging I could just buy a new one every two years.
She chuckled, and apologized but there was nothing she could do about it. She didn't set the rates, so I didn't blame her one bit.
Make some calls, I'll bet you can get a much better rate. Check with both the smaller motorcycle only companies like Rider, and the big ones. You never know what you'll find.

Your hit was going over that 1000cc mark. its a big step in liability based on the charts, your risk group is bigger for the potential of stupidity, .... and insurance knows it, that is why the premium is higher.

Do you have home/ renters insurance ? You may be able to get a multipolicy discount. Also if it is a bike that you use for seasonal riding only, look at limiting coverage during the winter with a 'storage' option.
and the final one that will definitely lower your rates, but may not help you elsewhere .... get married.

Getting married to save on insurance sounds like what my mother used to call "Spending a dollar to save a dime".

I'm 22 and single, no accidents, maybe 1 speeding ticket still on my record. Progressive offers better rates than every other place I've quoted for all of my bikes. It's not just a little difference either, it's 3-400 bucks a year cheaper.

Insuring the 09 XT still sucks.. I couldn't convince Progressive to classify it as a touring model instead of a sport bike.

i have multiple bike discounts on 4 with dairyland but when i went to put on the scg and firebolt, just the scg would have gone up 1100 a year cause they said the weight of the bike and not the size of the motor changed the cost. i called statefarm(they still have the car and homeowners) up and it went down to less than half for the year. keep calling around.

It's very strange how some riders get high rates from one company, while others get the best, lowest rates from that same company. It seems to go all around: Dairyland, Progressive, Geico, whatever.

I called around, and Dairyland worked out by far the best for me. But check them all out.

Again, and I've posted this in many many threads...call HD insurance. HD doesn't sell insurance, but they work with a number of companies and will get you a great rate. Let them do the shop-around legwork. They have me with Dairyland; full coverage on my CR is $380/year. 37 married male, "adventurous" driving record. 800-832-4449

#1 on the HD ins.

i've had good luck with Liberty Mutual. i'm with State Farm now, because coverage on everything was a little cheaper. the mc coverage was about the same between the two companies.
but i'm not carrying full coverage.

Dairyland.
I pay 255 a year.
May be cause I am old?
Got three speeding tickets in last 10 years.

State Farm. When I upgraded from an XB9R to an 1125R my rate went DOWN $5.00 a year.

Whoah.. how old are you guys? I'm with Whatever... well under $300 a year on my '06 Ss. I used an motorcycle-specific agent here. Thought I was getting Dairyland, but when the paperwork came in, it had some other company's name all over it... three letters, N-something-something. Not that I care, really, just a curiosity.

Maybe mine's cheap because I'm over 30, and my bike isn't brand new...?

get several different quotes. Make the insurance companies earn your business, don't just give it to them!

Apparently there are different rate formulas regionally and in my region of the North East - New England - Progressive has given me the best deal.
Progressive quoted me $212 and Geico $1,000+ for the SAME coverage!

I was with Dairyland when I first got the X1 (Feb. 2000) and dropped them when they doubled the payment. I'm currently with Progressive, first online then a local carrier. Online wasn't bad, somewhere in the $250 price range but I'm a face to face kinda dude and went in to a local ins. store who carried Progressive and the EXACT same coverage now costs less than $100.
