I am looking at O'Hare/ Chicago to MIA/ Miami for late March early April... best I can get on Travelocity and Orbitz is around $350.

Any thoughts, tips, tricks... was going to buy the $20 travel insurance which covers mechanical breakdown, weather and illness...

Try cheaptickets.com, it's best if your dates are flexible. I just flew from Greenville,SC to New Orleans,LA for $178 round trip.

Sometimes just switching the time of day or the day of the week, departing or returning, can make a difference.

sometimes you get a better deal directly FROM the airlines website. I've flown a million times, and 90% of the time a better deal was found that way.

That's a bad time of year to go. Spring break kids spending mom and dads money.

Don't forget to carry a beer bong in your carry on.

Try some of the low fare airlines directly... like Southwest, JetBlue or AirTran. They don't sell their tix thru sites like Orbitz...

If able, the cheapest day of the week to depart is typically Wednesday. You will get the best deal. Also, don't forget to look at Expedia.com. I get the best prices from them. Also check the cost difference between buying round-trip and two one-way tickets. It could be cheaper for you.

i know the biggest question i have for you char is what in the he!! is possessing you to to go to miami no matter what time of year it is. lived there for 5 years and have no desire to ever go back. but that just me, my wife my kids and a few other people i know who have left. if you got time to go a smaller airport and rent a car of which you might be doing anyway, then what a couple people have said and see if smaller airline has different places they go to. good luck.

try kayak.com, pretty good search engine for flights.
good info about checking smaller/nearby airports and varying times/days.
don't forget travel agents too. i've found (sometimes) cheaper airfares there.

if you've never been there then i guess it would be an interesting trip for ya. getting down to key west is "boring" but when you get down there and walk around, it can be quite interesting and bizarre at times. miami, you just have to stay away from certain parts of the town but if your visiting friends then they already know this. hope you find a good deal.
