Interesting I have not heard this news anywhere else...

At this point I'm feeling that I really wouldn't care if they went bust. What a long fall from American Icon to american embarrassment.

In the 80s it was protective tariffs. Now it's bailout.

I understand the financing arm going down, a lot have as folks have lost jobs and seen pay cuts (I know about the last one and worry about the first one.)

I never did understand the whole MV Agusta thing.

if Harley-Davidson is hurting so much for money, why don't they just sell Buell Motorcycle Company?

It would certainly be better than just closing the company down and not getting anything in return!

I think Harley is in need for some new leadership! What they have now is just not good enough to lead such a large company at this time.

This continues a theme that I think can be used if you're writing letters.

Harley always has their hands out for OUR public tax money (I believe they've already received TARP money for their financial arm plus at least 4 million tax dollars from PA just since 2000 and don't forget those HUGE tariffs in the eighties). They lobbied for and recieved tax breaks for people buying motorcycles as part of the stimulus plan earlier this year and they have recieved countless other tax breaks and incentives over the years.

But when we ask them to do one, tiny thing in the public interest (and their own interest) by selling Buell, they become enourmous pricks who lie to our faces and tell us Buell is too "integrated" to sell.

How do members of the Harley board sleep at night?

Well, you had better decide just what you want to happen to Harley, punish them, or hope for their survival. It's looking more and more everyday is a chalange for them. It's not out of the question that they could fold. Some are saying "thats just what they deserve", but the other side of that is that there will be how many more jobs lost because of that, not to mention Dealers going out of bussiness....? Who knows? it may be just deserts, but then mabe theres a bunch of entheusiasts that want Harly to make it through this depression. The number being put out there was $100,000,000 that Buell was worth or that HD could save or some such thing, well here their say'n some number around $500M is the worth/debt? of HD. It seems that it could all evaporate in the blink of an eye. SO I'd say that now is the time to support your brand if you want to keep it. Yea were p i s s e d..... thats a given....some of us were p i s e d just owning a Buell, or just when we wake up every-day, just because thats how were wired, but hoping for the downfall might not be prudent just now. Alot of COLATERAL DAMMAGE would go with it.

What gohot said. Nothing good comes from losing the biggest American motorcycle company still standing.

Unlike Buell, Harley Davidson will always exist. They might have to declare bankruptcy, they might have to restructure, they might have to shrink to half their current size, but they won't cease to exist. If it comes to it, Warren Buffet will always be there to collect the pieces.

IF (and I don't think this is likely) they declare bankruptcy I believe (and I'm no expert in this matter) they would have to sell off assets.

They could no longer use the "too integrated" excuse if they were going through bankruptcy and someone made an offer for the key Buell rights.

I would love to see Buell sold off to someone as well, but I think you all are just dreaming. Even if they go into bankruptcy the asset that is Buell is the factory and tooling and such in the building. That will be sold off, any IP or Patents that make money will be kept as a form of income for the company after emerging from any bankruptcy and those that own stock will take a big hit. I do not think Buell will open for business again as we knew it. That being said there may be another motorcycle with a different name by the same design team that may emerge, but I do think BMC is a casualty that cannot be revived at this time or even in the distant future. It may go the way of Indian at some point with an investor looking to revive the brand years down the line, hopefully it is a wiser investor than the first few tries with Indian.
