Want a thrill? Ride on of these own a steep hill... there is no engine braking.
A highly innovative machine that mostly taught companies what NOT to build.

Gotta love versatile: Mount pumps, generators, sidecars, gun boots and 50 other accessories. You can turn your Trail-Breaker into a plow horse or mountain goat. And they even float by virtue of hollow 15-inch aluminum drum wheels. Drum like in you can store up to 4.5 gallons of fuel or water in each wheel.

I wanted one of these when the bugs were worked out. Never heard much since. 2 wheel drive.

Sunday November 16, 2003 In one of the most significant moves in motorcycle history, Yamaha has announced that it will release a two-wheel drive motorcycle early in 2004.Though it is not the first two-wheel drive motorcycle in history, the new machine will be a landmark model as it seems certain to be the first of many - testing over the last five years has indicated enormous benefits in terms of safety, traction and (probably the one that counts most) outright cornering speed in slippery, sandy or muddy conditions.

When I was a kid we use to ride with Guy who had a Maico, he was maybe 10 years older than we were and helped us learn to keep from killing ourselves.

Us kids had Yamahas and Honda but Guy had that Maico. I remember it being a 400? and it had the biggest rear tire we had every seen. We nick named it "The Ditch Witch" because when he nailed it it left a trench! (you DID not want to be behind him as you'd get blasted)

If you enjoy old motorcycles, including dirt bikes, you really should make an effort to attend Vintage Days at Mid-Ohio

i know a very good reason why. because my hand is in on a patent for hydraulic 2wheel drive that has been keeping them from producing it for awhile. its part of a bigger hydraulically driven patent. lots and lots of lawyers fees. glad im not paying them...

also patents on the design thats plastered all over these things without approval. see that fatboy with the cheese wedge side car. that was the original design of there new advertising stuff. helped build the bike years ago. my friend was smart enough to patent the design. so thats been an on going battle also.

i had to take pics for the of this for the lawyers on one of my trips to wisconsin also. some of you may recognize it

god one of these days i keep thinking i wont have to work anymore...

There are various 2-wheel drive designs around. Chistini, Yamaha, and probably the most advanced, Ohlins.

Yamaha built a few R1's with a system [Ohlins I think]. They were planning on going to production when a serious crash incident NOT related to the drive system produced a bunch of negative PR. The bikes still exist, but production was canned.

Chistini does conversions of existing off-road and dual-sport bikes. Their system works, but is pricey, Ohlins has a very advanced electro-hydraulic system however, to my knowledge, nobody is building bikes with it as yet. Perhaps some specialized military apps. but nothing for sale to the public.

Yeah - I had seen it sometime ago. More to the point, I have talked with various folks involved in that project. The R1 worked extremely well and at one point was confirmed for production. Then somebody got killed. Finito to project. A pity really because the bike worked.

There is also currently a one-off 450 RR special using the Christini system and it's apparently quick. Somewhere there's some video and commentary, but I can't recall specifics.
