Any of you guys watching this series on the History Channel? My bro told me about it last night, so lucky me they had a marathon on today. I watched the first 6 or so today. Very cool! Those "Japs" were some crazy mo fo's, civilians included (jumping off cliffs to avoid capture). Much respect for the greatest generation.

+1

Haven't been able to watch much, but it's all been DVR'd thus far--weather's been surprising decent for riding, so I'll catch up on what I haven't seen when the snow starts flying.

PS: Don't give away the ending, k?

I've caught a few episodes and it's hard not to appreciate what those guys did... hard to pull myself away from it when need be.

Must see TV! When you think you have it bad just think of those men and women that put it all on the line. They are who we should aspire to be. Selfless.

I couldn't agree more. If our politicians had the same mindset, we would all be better off.

Excuse the brag, but I am so proud. Dad is 86 and barely can see the television but I call him daily to remind him to watch this series. He sits very close and probably vividly remembers more than he sees.

My father was named a "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor in Detroit with 6 other WWII veterans. Napoleon created this distinction in 1802. It was given to him by the French President and awarded by the French Consul General for his service in WWII and "is the highest honor that France can bestow upon those who have achieved remarkable deeds for France"

Because he wore a vet's cap with medals on it, they used his photo of the presentation on both the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press today.

Dad was born in 1923, he's 86. Listening to him describe the proceedings, he is quite excited. With my mom's passing this spring, this has been the first time he sounds very enthusiastic about stuff.

In the war he was a medic and was wounded three times, and was awarded the Silver Star for a rescue he did in the snow. He did little in France tho, he was wounded all those times before D-Day because he landed with the Texas 36th division in Solerno in southern Italy and fought the entire way up the boot before the big invasion in France started.

His local paper did a nice write up with video footage of the interview.

I went back to Italy and France with him twice with some other WWII vets. It was a very rich trip that I wish I could have taken my children on but they were too young. On those trips, in small Italian villages as we'd walk by looking for significant battle sites or places the vets remembered, little old ladies would run out carrying a bottle of beer to give to the veterans. At ceremonies at American cemeteries, bus loads of school children would treat these vets like rock stars clamoring around them for autographs.
