I am thinking of getting a new ride on mower. I currently have a 1978 snapper r-e-r hi-vac 33" with all the accessories. It shows no sign of quitting but I really need something to out do the neighbors. Should I buy something new? should I find a shop that will chrome plate my entire rider? what do you guys mow with and what would you recommend? |

There's an 1125 engine in the classifieds if I remember correctly. Mounting that puppy on your 78 Snapper--and yes, it could easily be made to fit--would out-do anyone in your neighborhood, let alone the state! |

i had an 1125 engine on it. couldn't come up with an exhaust system it would run right with, not burn me, and not get in the way when standing the mower on end for winter storage. |

I really wanted one of those Snappers at the time I bought my rider, I ended up with a Home Depot model Cub Cadet. The Snapper is a simply beautifully engineered mowing machine, but simply outside my budget. |

Call Dixie Chopper and have them build you a jet powered machine like the one on the old Home Improvement TV show...It was an actual mower that would run 70mph.! |

"The Snapper is a simply beautifully engineered mowing machine, but simply outside my budget." thats why mine is a 1978, it cost me $200! not much has changed on them over the years and I never have trouble getting parts. I haven't needed parts for mine yet but my boss has a 1963? snapper rear engine rider and the same story. |

Hustler- made in the US of A and they have Kawi V-twins. Best motor out there right now, shy of a diesel. I have a 60" Hustler FastTrack SuperDuty and love it. Of course I have about 5 acres to mow so I sort of need it. The owner of the John Deere dealer who has been selling JD's for over 40 years or so said that when they go to the yearly dealers' meeting all they talk about is how to keep up with Hustler. He recommended the Hustler over anything JD was offering. Very well built; simple to operate and maintain; built like a tank. |

How much property do you have to cut? How much do you want to spend? How much time do you want to spend cutting it? I have a Scag walk behind. I don't have a lot of cutting. http://www.scag.com/index.html One of my buddies just got a Exmark Lazer. http://www.exmark.com/Ride.htm |

Without the deck drive belt that must be a FAG's mower. (Message edited by Jramsey on November 17, 2009) |

The "Snapper" is a simply beautifully engineered piece of equipment. Oh, I'll second that. The mower isn't bad either. |

I am thinking of chrome plating the entire mower this winter. I love riding the snapper. I don't need a new one for function, just looks. I only have half acre to mow and don't really care how long it takes. In fact maybe I will go with a 28" deck... cheaper to chrome plate and I will get to spend more time riding the snapper. |

For the situation and the machine you have in hand, keep it! I could tell you are not a long time Buell owner by wanting to chrome it! Here is my suggestion. I recommend a complete tear down and repaint job, including a couple murals and really good clear coat. Throw in a set of wide aluminum wheels from like a racing go-kart, perhaps a large exhaust stack(chrome is ok here). Then get yourself some new Buell riding gear, boots, pants, jacket, gloves, and helmet(with speakers and MP3) with a dark mirrored visor. Gear up, mount that thing, and mow! Your neighbors will be envious(if not scared), and you will be safer than ever mowing at 2.9 mph!

Never was a fan of chrome but I figured it would make the neighbors jealous plus they couldnt ignore it with the suns reflection off of all the surfaces.... as for wearing riding gear... been there done that. youtube " stuntin the mower " thats me. |

I should have a new mower stunt video soon.. I have a toro rear engine without a deck that I do circle wheelies on and a front engine snapper hydro that pulls sick wheelies. |

Go for an american made & owned company -- Dixie Chopper. Been in business for same time as Buell and has a similar story. Started in his garage competing against the big boys. I've had mine for 3 to 4 years and no problems. |

There's a pretty good story on the internet by a guy who needed to fix a snow blower engine but decided to use his BMW R100 motor instead. A Buell powered mower ought to be fun too. |
