To all veterans, thank you! Semper Fi! Wayne USMC 1984-1989 ARNG 1989-1997 The Soldier --------------- It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the organizer, Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, Who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protestor to burn the flag. - Father Dennis Edward O'Brian, USMC (often incorrectly attributed to Charles M. A grateful nation salutes and honors. My grandfather's WW1 dress uniform and my father's WW2 dress uniform were both long ago donated to my hometown museum. I sent the battle flag from my father's submarine to the museum in Groton, it's the one with the fish wearing boxing gloves and a sailor hat with skulls for kills and half skulls for hits, highest tonnage sank by a sub in the Pacific. Better to be on display for our citizens than forgotten in an attic. The synergy of many veterans and active duty, over time, is what protects our values God bless. |

We had a great program at our school today. There were vets from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq who spoke to the students. It was a nice way to start the day. Thanks to all the veterans who made it home, and all the people still in the field. Bill |

Wow... I love the power of the Internet... Grandpa H was a bombardier the B-24 Liberaider in the European theater of WWII... I knew it was a big-ass plane... pretty cool stuff... also it was Army Air Force... What is the difference btw Air Force and Army Air Force? (Message edited by Whatever on November 11, 2009) |

After WWII the Air Force split away from the Army as a seperate entity. A shout out for my Dad who slogged through the mess on several of the islands in the South Pacific in WWII...he never talked about it...but I have his Purple Hearts... I for one am grateful to all those past and present that have stood in defense of our great land...thank you. |

Originally...the Air Force was a part of the Army. Just like the Marine Corps is a part of the Navy Today. When air power came about in WWI. The Army had many programs to get the Air Force flying. The long standing tie was that the Air Force always operated in direct support of troops in combat operations. That mission can be bombing, transport, air patrols, etc. Around WWII, the technology inside the Army Air Force was expanding at an exponential rate. This created a need for a chain of command that could push the technology and expand that branch even further. The biggest concern was that the Army Air Force was getting so large that the Army couldn't manage it. So... the Department of Defense created a new branch. The Air Force was born. There are many other reasons, all of them good ones...to separate the Army and Air Force. To this day though, if you go on an Army post and buy things at the Post Exchange you will always wonder why it says AAFES on everything. Army, Air Force Exchange program is much the same. While there are many large Army and Air Force bases that are exclusively one or the other... MANY posts have support from both. Especially those that have airborne units. The Army is just as much dependent on the Air Force as the Marine Corps is the Navy. Thank you vets, and from a fellow veteran, keep up the good work. My shuttle driver today was wearing his Airborne wings. I pulled my uniform out and we started talking about parachutes and airplanes in no time. It was great to hear him tell me about testing T-10A Parachutes back in the day. And I turned around and told him about my testing of the T-21A parachute and the revisions of the T10A through D versions that I jumped. We also got a kick out of Jump Master training and shared stories for a bit. Good to see him wearing those wings today, and yet another fine paratrooper. AIRBORNE! |

Especially those that have airborne units. The Army is just as much dependent on the Air Force as the Marine Corps is the Navy. Hey, wait a minute... The only time we admitted we needed the Navy was in a bar fight, and when we needed the corpsman, or the seabees, or... OK, I'll admit it, they really were some nice guy(and gals)... Trivia: Did you know that some Navy personnel can wear a Marine Corps uniform? It's true, and we had a few who did. Corpsman assigned to a Marine detachment can, while assigned to the Marines, wear a Marine uniform. However, they then become subject to the same dress and appearance standards as the Marines, so most Corpsman don't wear the uniform. Wayne (Message edited by wbrisett on November 11, 2009) |

Thanks G. These things were rarely talked about in my family... all my grandparents are gone now too... The two Gramps on my mom's side served as above... I know dad's side had at least one doctor serving as a Union Soldier in the Civil War... and someone served in the American Revolution also... Just wish I knew more about it! |
