Blake, with an '02 SD you should have the 7.3L PSD. The EGT gauge is not as critical on that model as it is with the 6.0L PSD that came after. The catalytic converter on the 6.0L backs up a lot of heat back into the manifold and it has weak head bolts and gaskets to start. Running too high of EGTs for too long is a recipe for disaster in the 6.0L! Odie, have you checked out www.ford-trucks.com? Great website with a ton of info for Ford enthusiasts! The forum is full of great, helpful individuals. It's like a Badweb for Fords! I didn't know if I wanted to go with a diesel because of the extra cost until I towed my 10k pound toy hauler with it. I purchased a 2005 Ford Excursion with the 6.0L PSD. WOW, what an eye opener! No regrets whatsoever. That 560ft/lbs of torque really makes a difference! And I get 20mpg unloaded on the highway to boot. I'll never tow with a gasser again. Schmitty |

EGT is a good gauge (no pun) of correct mixture. Lean is mean, but it can burn stuff like valves and rings (especially under boost). More fuel helps keep the temps down. Court - you probably don't "need" an oil burner...but damn, they're nice. It's like the Uly heated grips - nice to know its there when you need it. Ours routinely gets mid-high 20s for mileage, is a 3/4 ton quad cab 4x4 auto with 8' bed and I think tips the scales close to 7k lbs empty (I'll have to check on that) - but there's NO WAY something that big should get mileage that good But, it does. It'll go forever, it flat out hauls ASS when you whack it and the boost needle goes north of 30psi (all stock), and I can toss 2,000 lbs of pellet stove fuel in the bed and it doesn't even breathe hard. And I LOVE the turbo whistle! But I beg to differ guys. My *Wrangler* costs more than a Buell or HD ever will as far as possible mods. Fortunately I treat it like my Uly - did what I needed to get it to do what I wanted, and left it alone. No washing allowed. For the diesel, check www.cumminsforum.com |

When I bought my 14ft enclosed trailer I had a gas powered Ram 1500, what a turd! The best I could get towing with it was 9mpg, so when I traded it in on the 05 2500 quad cab I was in heaven. 17mpg towing and 20mpg empty! I love my Dodge products, the ergonomics are very user friendly and reliable. The Dakota my wife drives is similar, but the 2500 is plush. |

I have an 03 Ram 2500 24V with an auto and the auto is the weak link. Be glad you got the manual. Here is the forum I liked to go to: http://www.dieseltruckresource.com/dev/index.php Lots of help there. If you decide to upgrade electronics Banks stuff tend to be the "safest" but also the most $$$. I had a MADS Smarty Jr on mine but sold it unfortunately when I needed some quick cash. It hauled ass! Many a stock Mustang GT were left in a small cloud of black smoke when I had it on the highest setting. Enjoy the truck. |

Blake- I have done the basic mods to it (well, maybe a few more than basic!). When it wears out I will probably tear into it and go for more performance. I can get 420 miles out of a tank of fuel if I don't tow anything and keep my foot out of it. I'm at 185,500 miles on it now. Going very strong still. '01 F250 4x4 XLT, CC, SB, ZF 6 speed, 3.73LS, Hypertech Programmer, S&B intake, 4" turbo back exhaust, '08 Mirrors, 08 running boards, Dieselsite Fuel pressure gauge and FPR shim, HX Oil crossover line, OilGuard Bypass filter, DieselSite Max AC Assist Valve, AIH Delete, TurboMaster Boost Controller, Wicked Wheel, DieselSite turbo boots, Zoom Ceramic Clutch. |

Ha! If I could afford it I would get an '08 or newer. Mag I read says 700 HP with bolt on's and the tranny will take it no problem. At first I didn't like them but they have grown on me. I agree- any diesel is cool. New Dodges are nice looking. Torque is King for sure! |

i think its a 5" skyjacker, not sure 38's would fit. by the looks of it im sure 36's would fit, but those concrete cowboys do have to go |

Just remember if you go offroad...it is a HEAVY full size truck...you need the "biggest" tire you can fit...or it will be easy to get stuck I ran 36's on my Jeeps...Just sold my whole herd...had 2 XJ Cherokees and 2 MJ Comanches...one of each was a runner and one of each were spare parts...Cherokee was a rock crawler and the Comanche was street/trail/mud blaster...Hi pinion 44's, 5.13 gears, air lockers, 4.0 transfer case...36" Boggers...4.5 stroker motor...at 3600 pounds it was a Hoss. |

yup, i built an 86 K10 chevy with dana 60 front, sm 465, 205 t case, 14ff rear, 11" of lift, 38.5" boggers, 350 with alluminum heads. it didnt have trouble going through and local mud holes, and i still didnt have either axle locked. point is i need new tires and wheels before winter. i dont want to ruin those wheels this winter, i just need to sell them and buy black steelys for now |

This is true in a gas engine, but not in a diesel engine. Diesels have no "throttle". Air is a constant and engine speed is controlled by the amount of fuel. Too much fuel pouring in will raise EGT's which can cause some issues. A diesel blowing plumes of black smoke is not running efficiently. That's just raw fuel being burned in the exhaust. The air/fuel ratio is not "locked" in a diesel. It can vary wildly depending on the amount of fuel being injected, the amount of boost (my diesel has a variable vane turbo to increase or decrease boost. It's not just reliant on RPM), and even the quality and type of fuel you run. Modern diesels have what is called a FCV or "Flow Control Valve" that serves two purposes. It stops the potential for a run away condition and it also shuts the engine down more smoothly so you don't get the diesel "shudder". But it doesn't act as a "throttle". It also plays a role in the emissions system by slowing down the intake of fresh air and aiding the EGR to recirculate exhaust into the intake. VERY nasty stuff. If you have a diesel with an EGR better do two things. Get a CCV filter in place, and have that sucker chip tuned to reduce EGR operation or else you'll have soot getting mixed in with oil vapor and creating a very nasty sludge in your intake. I love my diesel. Knowing that my little 3.0L V6 has more torque than the 5.7L Hemi in the same vehicle is still hard to believe (and that peak torque is available at 1600rpm). Same tow rating, and MUCH, MUCH better fuel mileage. On top of that, diesel engines are typically more durable. It's a great tow rig for my motorcycle trailer. You honestly don't know it's back there until time to stop. I get better fuel mileage towing a trailer than the gas engine gets unlaiden. I think towing Fatty B's bike and mine to and from Buelltoberfest last month I got about 22mpg. Not bad considering all the N. Ga mountains I had to climb and that I have a reasonably heavy foot. |

I've had a few diesel powered units. this was first (not exact unit, same model tho) Then moved on to this (again, not exact tractor, same model with double trailers) and I've called a volvo like this home now for 3 years (this is one I drove for about 2 years, just upgraded to a new one that has a manual 10 spd trans vs the auto shift that the truck in this pic has) had new (to me) truck for a week, Bambi's father commits suicide, and I assisted. if you look close, you can see the clump of fur on the corner of the body. |
