I thought it was cool... Just happened to stumble upon it by accident and thought I'd share it. http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2008/10/04/buell rod-revolution-engine-powered-buell-concept/ |

Nice lines. I like how the lower fairing work follows the angles of the cylinders. Looks like fun if it ever made it past a rendering... |

I thought the sheer weight of that motor was why Buell didn't want to touch it. |

Cool almost brought back the tuber line with that motor. |

The reason concept drawings look so great is because they don't have to function! |

Fact is, a Revolution powertrain does weigh nearly as much as a WHOLE Buell. |

MC Escher inspired rear stand? And why do people feel the need to put someone else's name on their own design? Call it 'Buell inspired' or whatever, but independent artists passing off their concepts as coming from an established brand has always seemed disingenuous to me. Why would they ever go and do a fool thing like that when they had a perfectly good 360 lb pod loving beast? Somebody cue the new Hitler meme and insert the appropriate explitative subtitles for that motorcycle dispargement. |

The drawing is merely to illustrate what might have been and Eriks answer below. But look at the next link below and see who made a 436lb sport bike with that motor! "As Erik said when I interviewed him last year, the Revolution engine project was actually started by Buell but as the project evolved and specifications were developing, Harley Davidson took precedence and Buell moved in other directions." Roehr actually is using the engine... http://www.roehrmotorcycles.com/ |

"Fact is, a Revolution powertrain does weigh nearly as much as a WHOLE Buell." Motor weight is 194. |

Motor weight is 194. Dry engine cases only? Or with coolant, radiator, and everything needed to make a running vehicle? I doubt the hydroformed frame, aluminum bodywork, and plastic fuel cell are all that heavy on their own...but a 2010 VRSCAW (closest to the 'original' V-Rod) tips in at 637/670 dry/wet. My '09 CR is 375 dry. Dry to dry, that's 262 pounds less than the VRSC. Even with a motor weight (I suspect dry, not running-order) of 194 - the *whole* dry CR at 375 is only 181 lb heavier than the VRSC *engine*. That said...I am technically corrected. While the Revolution motor was being developed, it grew. It got added cosmetic details so it would "look" like a Harley. It grew chrome covers. Willy G relocated the water pump and main coolant hose to the center of the vee, for appearance reasons. The packaging was expanded to engineer in a "Harley powerband" with lots of torque, and it lost its sporting external dimensions. It went from a possible sport powertrain, to being a "power cruiser" porker. That was when it became a Harley powertrain and Buell backed out of it. |

Their specs note it weighs 436lb. Also costs $45k for the 2010 model. I guess I won't have to worry about getting one anyways. |

Rat, that's without the radiator, but with oil. Weighed on the dyno. The VR frame is pretty damn heavy as is the swing arm, pully, shocks, rotors and calipers. My bike on a scale weighs in at 637. Has anybody had the Cr on a scale with fuel and oil? |

Engine is way too heavy. What a waste of time, effort and money with the VR1000 just to gob it up with HD traits. Maybe if they went the direction of performance over aesthetics...today would be a different story at Buell. Can you imagine having a light weight VR powered Bolt in 02 and an air-cooled version? Had to go to rotax in 08. How would sales have been? I bet VRod owners would still buy them, especially if it was 20 hp stronger and 50 lbs lighter. |
