That was no metaphor. Reg is a better writer than that.
metaphor 1. Abbr. met., metaph. A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in “a sea of troubles” or “All the world's a stage” (Shakespeare). 2. One thing conceived as representing another; a symbol: “The high-rise garbage repository is a metaphor for both accomplishment and failure” (Richard Sever). Tony, that puffball comment has been on my mind too. I thought it was a great analogy. I can't wait till homecoming to see how things have played out. |

I wasn't there to receive the puff, but it does ring with me. What an opportunity all of us Buellers have, the seeds are in us. We don't have to be with Erik or the Elves to grow what they started. I'd like to think that many of us on this board will be part of the next Great American Motorcycle Company that leads the world in cutting edge performance and practicality for the masses. We, enthusiast motorheads, free of the legacy, the baggage, and the boardroom going out to rewrite the rules for two wheeled motorsports, and possibly more. In each of us a lesson from Erik will evolve into great ideas, big and small, that advance technology and manufacturing while bringing joy to others. That's a dream, but a good one. |

Tstorm, I was at that BattleTrax at the H-D 95th at Pilgrim Road. I was riding my 94 Fatboy at the time. I had to leave the S1 at home... I think that picture was in Battle 2win |

M2me & Tramp read me as I intended; it was meant to be metaphorical, not literal. I have no idea what Erik will or will not be doing in the future, and I doubt that anyone else on this forum does either. I would hope that we will see more motorcycles from him but, more importantly, I hope that he is able to do just what he wants to do. |

I thought it was a great article, but the "metaphorical statement in question" is the only slightly sore spot for me. I didn't read it as a metaphor, it read like a statement of opinion to me. But then again, I didn't write the damn thing so who am I to say. Reg, overall, I likey. |

...and I can see, XL1200r, how you could interpret it that way; I did not make it as clear as I should have. The underlying point to what I wrote was my concern for the loss of entrepreneurs that our country is experiencing. That is loss in general, not the loss of Erik specifically. |

I read the article several times and couldn't figure out why some people were upset by it. But then, I think life is a metaphor, so what do I know? Good article, Reg. And I had some GREAT times with Battletrax in the past. Thanks for the experience. |

The best of luck to you, Mark. We need more people who lay awake at night thinking, "What if..." |

...just have to find a way of making something I love into something that makes a paycheck. That's my "what if..." right now. |

Having failed at several things, and succeeded with a few others, I discovered that if I followed the "something I love" path, rather than the "paycheck" trail, the former somehow always managed to generate the latter. That bit of treacle means that I always worked harder when the love was there, and the ancient equation, hard work = success, still applies. |

True - but somehow I don't think riding my bike from here to the west coast is gonna pay my mortgage... I really applaud guys, like you, who have the skill to write and were able to meld it with something they really enjoyed. I've given thought to taking writing classes just to play with that very idea. All three of my Aunts own their own businesses in Worksite Safety consulting, Major Event Planning and, of course, freelance writing. Someday. Eyes are always open. |

>>>True - but somehow I don't think riding my bike from here to the west coast is gonna pay my mortgage... You might be surprised. I'd wager your entrepreneurship will well position you to find a way if your heart leads you there. I'm in the same boat at Reg . . . I've gone both ways (does that sound bad?) I've done it for love and I've done it for money. My experience may not be representative but I've reached a point where I'd never do it for money again. And . . . . don't get me started on this one . . . . you will NEVER know where the most wonderful opportunities in your life are going to come from. They'll find you. All you can do is be ready. |

M2me & Tramp read me as I intended; it was meant to be metaphorical, not literal. Thanks Reg! And thanks for writing the article in the first place. I still think it's one of the best things I've read about the Buell shutdown situation and I've read a lot of stuff about it on the web. |

You might be surprised. At the New York IMS this past year, I listened to a young guy from England do a little talk - was looking at a map of the U.S. and found a Long Beach in New York, and a Long Beach in California, and thought it would make a good road trip. He packed he bags, brought a camera and $2,000 with him (or something like that), bought a bike, did the ride, documented it and turned it into some moto mag, and it turned into an editor's position. I'm sure I could be plenty surprised. Read Stephen King's, "On Writing." I'll have to check that out - I've always considered myself at least above average in writing, but there's always room for improvement. I've gone both ways I've always had a suspicion about you... |

Xl1200r: In the immortal mutterings of Hunter Thompson: "Buy the ticket, take the ride" Hop on your new scoot and take a run out to the left coast. If you get snowed in in North Platte or Whitefish, it'll only come as a gift to your eventual narrative. You're gonna have to trust me on this. PS (edit): PM me on FB for any good coastal contacts...I can also point you to some really amazing MC parties (Message edited by tramp on October 30, 2009) |

XL1200R- Don't allow anything that you enjoy a lot to become a paycheck source. Turning your favourite avocations into vocations engenders a loss of avocation. I learned this lesson the hard way when I turned pro in 'boarding. it became a job that really just meant gettin up way to early in the AM and freezing my ass off...every day of the wek, instead of just going out riding the lines I wanted to ride when the conditions were optimal. technically, I lost a source of leisure... You wanna become a ho, don't expect to enjoy sex much, anymore. |

I can only speak for myself, but I can truly say that I love what I do. I love the people I do it for and the people I do it with. I think I am one of the luckiest folks on earth, because I get to do what I enjoy, every day. The only thing better, would be....well, I can't think of anything better. And Wes' passion for what we do here, well it's better described as an obsession. I have done this since I was 19 years old, and I can't imagine doing anything else. It is as much my heritage as anything else in my life ad I am very grateful. I just thought I would let you know... |

Pammy- You may have missed my point- you don't ride a motorcycle 8 hours a day for a living, therefor you still enjoy riding. While your job is mc-related, it's not the same as riding. What you do for work is ONLY a job, and not something you'd do for leisure enjoyment. HUGE distinction, here. |
