I just spent(now wasted) another twenty minutes explaining my Uly to what could have become a potential customer for a new Buell. I am at a loss as to how to explain how proud I am of my Uly, that caught their eye from across a parking lot, to someone not in the know, that it comes from a now defunct company. My normal spiel includes where to find them, whom to talk to, and introduction to BadWeB, and answering many many questions and passing on business cards if I have them. I have never minded doing so, and likely have sold some Buells in the process, or at least made them get to a dealer to look or test ride. I am still way proud of my Buell. But I am feeling like I should save my breath and just tell them never mind you can't be a part of this family. What are you folks telling potential Buellers? I know you still get approached like I do. |

I don't have an answer for them. But then again, I ride an S3T. I haven't had an answer since 2002 I had a guy stop and ask me about my bike yesterday. It never ceases to amaze me how an 11 year old bike can still create that much excitement. |

Tell 'em it's none of their business, shut their mouths and get on down the road. |

Well, the bikes are not going to desintegrate spontaneously... Tell them about the bike.. Let them make the decision if they want to try to buy one. As long as there are Buells on the road, the Buell family will remain.. Anyone can be a part of that family.. |

Tell them,(the Truth) to go buy a HonYamSuz. HD just pissed off 100,000 Buell owners and layed off a lot of good american workers.... |

Tell them if they are a lucky person they will find a Buell of their own somewhere. It will change their life, so it is worth the look. Tell them Buell is currently out to lunch, but will return their calls when it gets back |

+1 what Vamp said. I have 2 Rider's Edge classes the next 2 weeks and I know I'm going to get hit with questions about Buell closing by the students and the employees at the shop I teach at. I'm going to say I'm glad I have one! K |

I always tell them my 2002 M2 is what the Sportster should have developed into and if you are lucky/smart enough you just might get one yourself. Since the day I bought my Buell in August of 2002 I have believed that it was the kind of bike that will always be cool. Unique at almost any event, sounds great, fun on the twisty roads, comfortable for a 300+ mile day, and simple to maintain. This summer I went to lunch with a group of my co-workers, none of whom ride. I parked my M2 on the street right outside the window and they couldn't believe how many people would just stop and look over my bike for 30 seconds or more. It was almost comical how it stopped sidewalk traffic. Who wouldn't want to own something that has both form and function? 20 or 30 years from now, I imagine I will be out riding and when I attend events like the Slimey Crud Run all us remaining Buellers will be parking together and talking about the old days (and maybe swaping a few spare parts). |

Oh yeah, as far as what to sell them? I don't know, if you work at a HD dealership I guess you could offer them a $35 T-shirt or a $35,000 chrome barstool |

i tell them my x1 is a sportster motor on crack in a sport bike frame designed by erik buell. amazes how people still think my bike is NEW. what is it and what year is it is the common question. i luv parking by all the rice rockets, because people walk past every other bike and always stop walking at mine! |

Them: "What kind a bike is that?" Me: "A Buell" Them: "Buell? I heard they quit making them?" Me: "Yup" Them: "What are you going to do now?" Me: "Ride it like I stole it. Wanna ride with me?!" |

Vern- good question. Thanks, by the way, for sayin'. Dammit, since mine is not operational, I hadn't thought about how to handle this situation. There's no really good way to explain it. The only decent answer for someone who is truly interested in acquiring one is to tell them to have their "favorite" HD dealer do a dealer search for the remaining new ones- barring that, tell them to start scouring the for sale ads and start following the Badweb to "lern themselves up" on the bikes. I was thinking about getting a custom license plate for mine that says "ORPHAN". Any other good ideas for custom plates? Mebbe "86HDLUV"? |
