I, like most of you I imagine, felt stunned, then gutted, then angry about the whole situation. I have neither the time nor the will to wade through the 1000s of posts on the various Buell forums I frequent. However, I notice that many people are saying that HD have closed Buell to hang on to the patents. Well what of these patents? I'm not a patent law expert, but I'm not sure they're enforceable, Fuel in the frame concept? I had a moped with that back in the 70s! Ditto underslung exhaust. ZTL brakes, my bicycle had them back in the 60s. Mass Centralisation Concept? tricky one, how do you prove an infringement of a philosophy? I can see lots of lawyers & technical experts doing well out of this. I have no disrespect for Erik Buell in saying this just pointing out facts. I expect Erik's contracts with HD have all sort of gagging & non-competition clauses in them, & imagine that lawyers will be poring over them as we speak (or type.) The same with the patents probably. I've met Erik Buell a few times & he doesn't strike me as a fellow who stays down for long. He may come back as somebody's "technical consultant" or whatever, short of killing him I don't see that HD can keep him from doing what he wants to do, it would unconstitutional no? He looked on the video like he'd just been kicked in the bollocks, which I suppose he had been, & I hope he comes back to return the compliment to those at HD. I'm not going to bash HD they just behaved as they would. Might as well blame a scorpion for being a scorpion, or a tree for being what it is. What will Erik do? that's up to him, but an updated tuber S3T with an S&S in it would be a seller I reckon. Erik Buell, indirectly, changed my life, as is the case for many of you reading this. I have made friends across the world & been to places I would never have gone if I'd not bought a Buell. My life has been enriched & for that I'm grateful. So this is my message to you all (& Erik if he's reading this). | ||

First thing I did today when I got up at 3AM to start my day was to read this thread and watch your video. Thanks Grumps! Did you write Erik yet to tell him 'I BELIEVE IN YOU'? You've got some great stuff in this post already. Send it to Erik, I'm sure it would lift his spirits to get a heart felt letter from France. Now to the difficult work at hand, to read all of the posts on all of the sites that I have missed wasting my time sleeping! | ||

I'm snowed under with selling up here, finding a house on the other side of the country & looking for another job for me & school for the nipper. When the dust has settled a little & vision is a bit clearer; I'll write. Be handy if there was an address, electronic or otherwise, to send support messages to, that didn't have anything to do with BMC directly. Court, can you help out on this? | ||

hey grumpy, i was thinking about the same thing last night. and that's why i think if he got together with Mr Roehrich of roehr motorcycles, this could be possibly a match made in heaven. i'm looking at the purchase of our 6th buell(two of which have been totaled in the past couple of years) and if the price was right on a cr then who knows. if anything in the world has sparked an interest in me for anything, it would be buell and i can't imagine any part of the rest of my life without one. nice touch with the video and i'll be sending a card up to wolfridgerider so he can hand deliver it to the buell factory next week. | ||

>>>>short of killing him Sorry . . .that doesn't work, it's been tried. Twice (that I am aware of) Erik has been "no pulse, no respiration" and fought his was back. One time was particularly troublesome . . . and he decided to "stay away" for a while . . but . . lo and behold. He was down Thursday morning, actually for the last month. He is no longer down.

Most of Buell's patents are for the specific way the specific mechanism is applied to Buell's to date. Change or improve the mechanism and there's no conflict. |
