Hey guys,

Ive got an 01 Dodge Durango with the Magnum engine. The vehicle has been great to me. Its got 136 thousand miles on it still runs like a top. Ive only had one issue with it.

Im trying to remember the timelines but Ill estimate. About a 1 and 1/2 years ago I needed to have the left front axle replaced. It had slid off of the retainer clip and the splines of the differential. The boot ripped, the joint was toast. My father (mechanic) replaced it with a rebuilt axle and a short time later it happend again. The U joint didnt blow apart but the axle slid off of the retainer clip on the splines of the diff. We replace the clip (again) and locked it back on. A few weeks latter the axle poped off the clip again. We thought we had a faulty axle.

Not taking any chances we changed the left front axle with a stock OEM Dodge axle and all was well. I live in New England, drove it through some good snow storms with the 4wd engaged, no issues.

Fast forward to yesterday. I went to run a few errands. Pulled out of the driveway and I could hear the clicking noise in the front end. Sure enough the axle had come off and this time it did a number on the U joint. It destroyed the boot as well. I had it towed to my dad's garage where he's going to replace the axle again with anouther new one. Lucky for me the part is under warranty.

Any good thoughts or suggestions of what could be causing this. The splines on the transfer case look ok. Ive owned the vehicle since it had 60 thousand miles on it and the problem did'nt start occuring until 110 to 120 thousand miles. Ive never had an accident with it.

Anyone have any issues like this with they're Dodge. Im afraid of the the answer I might get out of this.

Thanks,

Eric

Wow, thanks for your thoughtful input. I supose you would like to make the payments too? Lets see, do they make a full size SUV that can pull my trailer, um, no....

Axle, like from the diff to the wheel...or 'driveshaft' from the xfer case to the diff?

Does it have a lift kit? Or a "leveling" kit that brings the front end up?

Im talking about the front driveshaft. From the diff to the front wheel. Its coming off at the differential.

No lift kit, the SUV is stock.

the consensus here at the shop (chry, dodge, jeep dealer) is the splines on the axle shaft are messed up. need to replace the shaft in the front diff.
