.. without a title.

It's a huge pain to try to get it back to roadworthy vehicle status.

I've talked to highway patrol, public safety, tag agency, tax commission, etc. Every agency sends me to the next in the evil circle of confusion.

After a couple weeks of phone calls and asking questions I sweet talked a DMV employee to show me the ownership history of the VIN so I can at least track down the last guy to register the thing as a whole motorcycle.

Funny thing is, after explaining that I need to find the last known legal owner, she said that the paperwork I was asking for would require that I prove that I am the current legal owner. : )

PK,

Try requesting a VIN verification from either the local yocals or the Highway Patrol. That should get you started.

Spidey,

You'd be a felon in Florida! LOL

I've done it several times here in California. It's usually pretty easy. My record is 3 hours in with nothing and out with registration and plates. Once they sent me to the CHP for an independent verification.

As long as it hasn't been reported stolen and the VIN is intact they'll take your money and issue a title. Here anyway, every state is different.

Wow - here in Indiana it is a pretty simple thing. Show a bill of sale at the BMV and either take it to the BMV so they can check the vin, or have a the police come to your house and do it.

So sell it to someone in Indiana, have them get a title and then sell it back to you......

Any problems getting titles/tags with certificates of origin? Always had dealers do that paperwork before so I have no experience with it.

Titles? Pfft, we don't need no stinkin' titles.

Possession is 9/10 of the law anyway right?

Certificate of origin is as good as a title, provided the bike was never titled.

I'm going through this with a dirt bike here in Ohio. I didn't sweat the title because its offroad only, and I have no intention of plating it.

But the Ohio state trail system wants it registered to get a sticker : (.

In Ohio anyway, I think the deputy registrar in each title office can short circuit some of the process and help if you can bring them a good story with documentation how you have made good faith efforts to track down the owner.

Speaking of offroad only..

After buying a Blast new in 07, State Farm was convinced that it was a dirt bike and could not be insured for street use. I guess they just saw a 500cc single and made the wrong assumptions
