Update from original post http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/406 2/491616.html?1252438642 The intermittent nature of the incorrect voltage at the battery terminals at idle just didn't make sense to me for an intermittent stator failure, since the bike hasn't left the garage in 3 weeks Today it dawned on me to hook the voltmeter to the terminals and wiggle the different connectors to see if there was an appreciable change. Hooked up the meter, battery voltage 12.8/ Started it, 12.4. pulled the connectors I had previously re-tucked in to position, then looked at the meter 19.9 at rest. 13.5 while running!. 30 seconds between the readings and bike hadn't moved a foot. Wiggled the heck out of the voltage reg/stator connector. No change. TOUCHED the beloved 77 connector - voltage drops the slowly climbs back up. Wiggle all the other connections. No change. Played with the 77 connector - again - voltage all over the place. So - anything bad about cutting out the connector and hard wiring it? | ||

the only negative is "if" you ever need to change the stator. | ||

Thanks I pulled the connector apart and clipped the tabs off. Probably didn't take 1/4" off each end - so "when" I have to change the stator there'll be plenty of wire left. I did reconnect using the only thing I had - cheap barrel-type butt connectors and the voltages are right where they are supposed to be. But before I button it up I'll go to the parts store and get something better - maybe those posi-lock connectors. Sure don't want it coming lose with all the vibes so close to the engine | ||

Doesn't matter if you cut and splice. If you get a new one it has an updated plug that will require replacing the other end anyway. I soldered mine......it was fun!  | ||
