He's getting exactly what he ordered.

Exempt union members from taxes on premium health insurance.

what would they need to be exempt from. when i was in the carpenters union for over 18 years, just as long as i worked over so many hrs a year, i received health care that i did not have to pay for myself, the contractor payed for it. shouldn't the contractor get the tax exemption if anyone. i dropped out some 7+ years ago cause they lost focus and i was catching crap for trying to make a difference, even from the business manager. i like what i'm doing now anyhow.

That realization has not settled in with many, yet. The country is divided and growing increasingly so, which is why I'm pessimistic on it's future.

Let them eat Tuscan kale?

Actually many people "close" to that food market are on food stamps. Much of D.C. is a welfare community. Only a few blocks from marble monuments are high crime areas.

What does the First Lady shopping for produce have to do with Italian fires? Don't the Romans have capable Fire Departments? I haven't seen anything about large fires in Rome on the News. Maybe you got confused with the fires in California? Or possibly the usual brush fires in Australia?
Anyway, how is a bunch of kale going to help deal with big fires, wherever they are? Maybe she's going to soak the kale, then you could use it as a blanket and smother the fire?
I bet she'd get better results if she used okra!

But! the first Lady has no choice but to have all that security. Farmers markets are a pretty cause for her, and a personal visit to a project she supports is not only justifiable, but laudable. That's HER JOB! The effect on peasants of her security detail & road closings would be the same if she were an ardent conservative and Republican First Lady, so there is no partisan bias here.

I actually like the fact that Obama goes & gets a Burger from local shops. I like avocado on my burger too.

Perhaps the gentleman from Philadelphia has some insight other than just spewing stupidly at the webmaster.
While Blake is harsh, singularly minded and in some instaces rude, a tool he is not.
The glaring insesitivity of our polititians in all levels has become intolerable, and we have an obligation to discuss and make each other aware.

Aesquire,
Ding Ding! A winner! Unfortunately, my local farmer's market got closed down last year, and the land was sold to a developer for townhouses, as part of a crooked land deal involving a City Councilman. The councilman is now in jail for that and other offenses but the deal was done, the market is gone, and there's no going back. Sucks. My neighbors and I, and my co-workers, too, have started an informal produce co-op - we all planted gardens and trade vegetables. No room for big stuff, like corn, in the city, unfortunately, but fresh peppers on home-grown lettuce that cost me a total of 5 bucks for seeds and a small rise in my water bill is pretty nice.

Fun,
The gentleman from Philadelphia apologizes to Blake and others on this thread for his ill-conceived attempt to demonstrate continually posting the same vulgar insults directed at someone personally is annoying, rude, and says little about the target and much about the poster. (search bw for "fuching idiot" to find the recent prime offender - hint he has his own section)

See if you can take the United Nations with it . . .

For the last two weeks I've had my face and license place photographed at freeway and tunnel entrances.

A few Labs are cute but the Ferry and subway stations are pretty much overrun with bomb dogs.

The toll booths at the tunnels are bridges look like and armed encampment in Afghanistan.

We've been told to pretty much rule out driving in Midtown from 2am tomorrow morning until Thursday . . .

All so Stupid & Co. can attend the UN General Assembly.

I assume naughty folks around the world are coming here to thank the United States for disarming and paving the way for some real fun in Europe and the Middle East.

Hahahaha . . . I've seen the Homeland Security folks in the airports. My greatest concern is that when they were all hired we'd have to wait longer for fries at McDonald's.

About once a year one of the NY newspapers sends 10 folks through security with things like pistols, chemicals and so forth. Typically, 6 or 7 make it through with no problem.

I plan to fend for myself around NYC if the shit hits the fan.

This all makes very nervous for this week...

President Obama is visiting Hudson Valley Community College - the largest community college in our area (Albany, NY).

I live 2 miles from the Campus. Good thing I can work from home.

Oh, and no tickets available to the public for this one - I'm betting he's making sure the place is packed full with his own people.

If a congressman will call him a liar during a formal speech, there's no telling what one of us regular folk from this rural county would do.

Well that's ok since some new rules on farmer's markets will quite possibly put them out of business too. I guess the fees that they will have to pay to prove that they are 'organic' will be quite exhorbitant.

I wonder at what point in time that everyone's costs get so high that people realize what a terrible mistake has been made. (not that a lot don't already do)

Hey Wolfridge rider; I didn't go get strudel after all. Instead, Terri and I rode down to Providence, RI and got pizza at the Caserta Pizzeria. Then we rode back roads into Connecticut. Stopped in Putnam to look at the magnificent waterfalls, then rode on to Pomfret; where we stopped at the Vanilla Bean Cafe for a cup of coffee. Saw an Airhead BMW cafe racer, a pretty S1 and a 1914 BSA on a trailer; as well as the usual assortment of cruisers and sportbikes. Then we took the scenic route north back into Massachusetts. The weather was perfect. It was a damn good ride.
I hope your class went well, and all the new riders will love riding.

See if you can take the United Nations with it . . .

That'd be great!

Here in Rochester New York, we had the original indoor mall. Midtown Plaza. ( also the first tubular rail roller coaster, the prototype for Space Mountain, at local Seabreeze park ) It's being stripped of asbestos right now, in a multi million $ project.
It was taken by the City for taxes when the previous guys ran out after buying it with tax incentive money. The City is selling it ( they hope ) to a megacorp who wanted a nice cheap HQ and want the plaza demolished without hurting the underground parking below it. At City expense. The sale is not final, because of the economy, but they are stuck with it, because it's now part of the master plan.

Why? well, the guy who runs the bus company, and used govt. money to try & run for office, & a bunch of county & city do-gooders, decided we needed a bus garage, indoors, with a bus terminal & shopping.... and we could get federal & state money for it.

If they put the local community college in it they could get education money. ( right now the downtown campus is in a rented, abandoned big store, like a Macy's. next door to the proposed bus garage)

If they put a performing arts center in there they could get arts money.

Meanwhile, a local company bought an Aussie built high speed ferry to run back & forth to Toronto. It was real pretty.

Light rail connection from the bus/arts/school to the ferry? more money.

AWSOME! so they put a block of downtown out of business, kicked the businesses out of Midtown Plaza and started a multi year coming up on a billion$ planning cycle to design this marvelous civic pride booster.

The Ferry guys ran out of money, despite having the terminal building built/refurbed for them for $1 a year rental for 30 years. It turns out that a foreign built ship needs a pilot to park in Toronto, and the Canadians were too smart to believe the ferry would be a real deal & didn't build a whole new port for it.

The City buys the ferry, runs it for a few months then figures out they can't make money & sell the ferry to a European buyer. They then spend the money from the sale of the ferry, leaving the taxpayer with the payments for decades to pay off the ferry we no longer have.

So there is no place for the light rail to go.

The performing arts money isn't going to come because the city took too many years arguing about the plans and still hasn't secured the all the land to demolish the entire downtown area, and the transportation money has time limits on it too. The Arts guys are trying to raise enough money for their version of Broadway on the bus depot, but haven't met their goals.

So, we could happily have the United Nations meet at the lovely Midtown Plaza. The interiors are stripped out, & the air is full of asbestos, and there is little shopping nearby since they took out all the stores downtown. We might even get the company that hasn't bought Midtown Plaza yet to agree to an explosive demolition.

If not, well, we just have to wait for our Bus garage/depot/college/arts center/light rail terminal & Zeppelin hanger to be built. ( probably just in time for personal transporters & home induction learning & infotainment units )

And that's local government.

>>>because the city took too many years arguing about the plans

For the laugh of a lifetime . . come look at the site of the former World Trade Center.

It took 400 days to build the Empire State Building from the day the first shovel went in the ground until the day the first tenant occupied an office.

What we have here in NYC . . after 8 years . . is still a big hole in the ground.

The hole, however, has cost more to date than the buildings that used to occupy the site.

The upside is that several of my fellow students are being paid handsome salaries to coordinate the memorial. They have (no kidding) a $1,000,000,000+ budget and all the time in the world. One of them, who just turned 30, jokes that, with luck, she'll retire on the project.

Moral of the story - there are damn few things the government does well.

On the other hand . . . thanks to all of you who provided the tax dollars for the dinner at Cipriani's. Seems kind of expensive to pay $800,000 for a dinner for a bunch of construction folks but, as was pointed out, "hell, it ain't our money".
