Hey folks- it's a beautiful rainy day, crummy for riding but good for home cooking. My GF is fixing red beans and rice as a side for my grilled pork chops later this evening- we also decided she should cook some fresh homegrown okra that a coworker gave her. Never had it the way she's fixing it- she has a technique to "de-slime" the okra before stewing it. I've generally always had okra fried, so I'm looking forward to trying it this way- will post the results after dinner. In the meantime, do any of youn's have some good & different Okra recipes? Do tell... BTW, although I'm sure the answer exists somewhere in the BW archives, what's the deal about Okra and Buellers? Inquiring minds want to know. Also- if anyone passes thru Mur-vil and stops at the Shed for some eats, they now serve some tasty fried okra there. I mentioned once to Denny (the bossman there) that if anyone shows up to eat there on a Buell, they should get some free okra. Try him and see if it works... Thanks all! |

Pickled okra is considered "brain food" isn't it? |

Pickled okra is the best! At the VFW National Convention in Orlando recently, after the classes for the day were over, I was strolling through the hospitality houses. I had a frosty malted beverage and was looking for a food treat and stumbled on a new jar of okra, pickled with hot peppers. They were so good that I kept looking around and when nobody was paying attention, I swiped them all for myself. Pickled okra and beer, who could blame me? |

My hubby and I tried growing some okra this summer, but behold, it died. I think it has something to do with trying to grow it at 7000ft in elevation and very low humidity levels. We are, however, visiting family right now in St. Louis and actually saw a real full grown okra plant. Why oh why can't we grow it at home. Enjoy your OKRA |

Okra became the official vegetable of the BWB when Dave Stueve (daves) refused to eat it at a BBQ place in Dallas when Erik treated a bunch of us to dinner. rt |

Okra is an essential part of a proper gumbo. The GF's okra/redbeans/rice dinner was most excellent. Okra, peppers, onions, stewed and reduced were great with all the other stuff. Wonder if anyone could attempt a campfire Okra stew of gumbo at TWO? Yummy... (Message edited by 86129squids on September 27, 2009) |
