That sucks. I can't tell you how many times I've been 'laid-off' due to market downturns. It's always personally difficult beyond belief. Good luck li'l elves, I think you make the best toys in the world. Keep your chins high! |

I'm in a MAJOR down turn myself.... I'm making 68% less than a couple of years ago and I hate to hear that Buell is shutting down for a couple of months.... I hope everyone there is able to weather this storm. Loss of income would be very hard to deal with at this time of year... with the holiday's coming up and all.... |

Buell to temporarily shut down East Troy plant Buell Motorcycle Co. plans to shut down its East Troy plant during November and December, resulting in the temporary layoff of 50 employees. Buell, a subsidiary of Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HOG), will pay eight days of holiday pay for the remainder of 2009 and will continue medical benefits during the shutdown, according to a notice filed Sept. 8 with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. Buell did not indicate a reason for the temporary shutdown in the filing. Parent company Harley-Davidson is temporarily halting production at its Wauwatosa plant and other factories for 14 weeks, including the entire fourth quarter, to realign production with reduced demand for motorcycles. Buell's last day of production will be Oct. 30. Workers are expected to return to their jobs on Jan. 4, 2010. The employees are not represented by a union.

Really have mixed emotions. OUR work will NOT do a slow-down. If they need it, they just lay-off. Wish we could have a choice of reduced hours instead of lay-offs. Either way isn't good but is certainly understandable. |

That's too bad. Washington has to quit scaring the crap out of folks so they start spending money again. |

that sure is upsetting! I know how it feels. I too was laid off four years ago when The Bush administration let the housing industry go to hell in a handbag. Now I'm back to work making about 40% less that I was making but at least I'm working. A couple of years ago I wanted to go and apply for a job at Buell because I love their motorcycles so much that I think it would be a great place to work. Every year I go there to Homecoming and talk to their employees, they are always such great people to talk to and seem so excited about the work they do. Now the economy has hit them also, that just plain SUCKS! I've said it before and I'll say it again, BUY AMERICAN!!! because it keeps out money at home for Americans like the great employees at the Buell Motorcycle Company. |

I bet this in large part has to do with Thunderstorm production being shut down at the Capitol Dr. Motor Plant. They're re-tooling the Menomonee Falls Powertrain facility as we speak, the Thunderstorm will be made there. The entire motorcycle market has been hit by this economy, thank God this layoff is only for 2 months. There's HD employees that have been laid off for 3 months already and Mercury Marine employees layed off since January. |

That's what I'm thinking. If Harley has shut down, they won't be providing engines. If they're not providing engines, then what's Buell to do? Build just the 1125 models? But that's only two models out of their line up. In addition, another thread here indicated that Buell just designs and builds the motorcycles. EVERYTHING THING ELSE is done by Harley Davidson... distribution, marketing, technical support, etc. Maybe that's the real reason? |

I was a 39 year veteran of the auto industry. Retired now. At one point I was laid off for over 4 years in the late 70's early 80's. I went back to school and just as I graduated, I got called back to work. I was lucky in a way. Times are sure different now. |

So far in my area I've seen a Honda/guzzi/Aprilia dealer. A honda/Yamaha/Polaris dealer. And one HD dealer close in less the month. That's in the Milwaukee area. |

What HD dealer closed? I know that Kirk sold off Wisconsin HD last week... But I haven't heard of anyone closing. |

That would be it Steve. Kirk may have sold off but not because he was profitting by keeping it open. Wouldn't that be correct?? If it was doing well it would be up and running. I know some employees kept there jobs like Bull and few others by bring them to Hal's. Others are gone.... sucks!!! |

Heck Keith closed the Dirts Store at Ukes. Its being sold out of the HD store that I can tell. The Dirt Store now has a for lease sign on it. |

Dana, it is still up and running, and will continue that way. I wont speculate if it's been profitable or not. As far as I know by what I've heard, It's just changing ownership. Not closing. I'm sure there will be personnel changes. That typically happens when a business changes ownership. Kirk had a major heart attack a couple of years ago, and I know a large part of the decision to sell Wisconsin HD was to help reduce his stress level. |

the only dealer I've heard of closing so far in SE Wis has been Hartford HD. The owner had this one and West Bend going at the same time, it was very small and an offshoot of West Bend, so I don't blame them for shutting it down. |

Harley announced this morning that not only will Buell have a layoff, they said until the end of the year, but HD is shutting down its distribution network and more folks, up to 60, are being laid off at Capital Dr. Plants (with an "s"). |
